Someone at the codex pointed (
http://www.diabloswing.com/) them out to me. Pretty odd mix of elements (from the two songs available for play there), with swinging jazz rhythm, fingersnapping, brass istrumentation, celloes and metal guitar and operatic singing that even when subdued I can't understand on the first track because it isn't english (even though everything on their web page, including song titles like "Rag Doll Physics", is). I should warn people like me who have an aversion to cookie-monster vocals that there is a bit of that, but they come off like an odd kind of scatting, so it isn't so bad. Their record company "Guillotine Grooves" claims to be dedicated to "rock or metal band
of the rare, groovy or swinging kind" but they're the only thing like them I know of. Maybe they could do the music for the next Diablo game?

Sounds like Nightwish. Also, about Diablo: Horrible suggestion and even worse as a joke. :sly:

I was expecting to fucking hate this, but actually its not half bad, sounds like if Fantomas stuck on one idea for a whole song. I can picture it going down pretty well in a club - you could dance like Jim Carey in the mask, stupid mime-hands and all.
Is this just a logical progression? I mean, Marilyn Manson already succeeded in turning metal into glam, numerous sour-faced viking types have been trying to turn it into wagner for a while now, I guess swing must have been on the 'add a chug to it' list as well.
Second thoughts, this second song sounds kinda like evanescence. Boo.

Er...no.
I figured this would have happened a few years back when Morphine and Squirrel Nut Zipper started taking off, but the whole thing started fading pretty quickly. Not my thing, but still interesting. The female singer sounds a bit off key in places (??)...

I can hear the resemblance, it's got the same sort of Emo/Goth Opera thing going on, but the instrumentation (for the most part) makes me want to keep listening instead of shoving icepicks into my ears to make the pain stop.
Balrog Boogie is definitely the better track, especially if the band is calling itself the Diablo Swing Orchestra.

I remember hearing something by Squirrel Nut Zippers on Dr. Demento once, but I have no memory of what it sounded like. I dig what I've heard of Morphine though. I remember wondering how the sax could compete with the bass-amps in a big venue and then seeing some concert footage where a microphone was placed right in the big sound-hole of the sax and smacking my head at the obviousness of it.
I second the Balrog Boogie track being much better than the other song. And yes, I was joking about the Diablo games. Everybody knows they won't make the next one before Duke Nukem Forever!

you probably heard "Hell" on Dr. Demento, I think that was the only SNZ song that made the radio rounds. They're straight up 30's style Louisiana Hot Jazz, and, imo, the best band to come out of the late 90s Swing Resurgence. Over two years since their last album, though. :(
[edit]according to Wikipedia the band completely self destructed, and yet according to Katherine Whalen's (the female vocalist) website, they're doing a small Southern tour.

Right on all counts. :)
