I've never played any Diablo games. But I see that a lot of people are quite fond of them. So my question is:
What exactly is so special about the two older Diablo games ? What makes them so good ? The story ? The cutscenes and movies ? Mindless slashing of a zillion mobs stays fun ?
1) The overall polished gameplay. As opposed to many games that (try to) polish the graphics and slap on some mediocre gameplay.
2) Battle.Net, one of the few independent gaming networks that actually work and have players. Far too many games have shoddy MP services or use a poorly integrated version of Gamespy (or other equivalent service).
3) Good audio feedback. Feeling part of the action is as much a function of the sounds as the gameplay and graphics. For an old example, compare the Nailgun with the Super Nailgun in Quake (1), the latter just feels more powerful even before you look at the damage.
4) Really easy to pick up. The interface can be quickly understood, even by someone who doesn't know any English. In a similar vein, the classes and their skills tend to be easy to understand through a quick glance.
One thing to understand though, is that Diablo and Diablo 2 have a somewhat different gameplay focus. Diablo is a somewhat slow paced game that tends to focus on 1 (PC) vs 10 (cannon fodder) at the most hectic with 1 vs 3-5 being more common. Diablo 2 has a higher pace, both movement wise and combat wise, with 1 vs 10 fights being closer to the baseline. Rushing headlong into a new area is fairly common in Diablo 2, while it will far more frequently lead to death in Diablo.

Can't win them all. But I'm not Koki so I guess I win anyway.

Just seen the vid of the trailer reveal at that Blizzard event.
Cripes people get far, far too excited about this stuff. I imagine the responses by Halo fanboys to the sequels were doubly nauseating.

At least Halo's gameplay doesn't consist entirely of repeatedly pressing Mouse 1.

Shame Bethedsa didn`t take a page from blizzard`s book and stuck with the gameplay and interface styles of the previous games in the case of Fallout 3 :(.
