Pretty much. You get a few staple spam spells like magic missile and charged bolt which cost no mana. And then you have more powerful spells like Disintegrate that drain mana very quickly.

Blizzard announced release date for Call of Diablo to be May 15th
Cue skepticism and push-back jokes.

ZZZZZZZ. Wake me up either when Torchlight 2/Grim Dawn are released or if they remove the always online requirement for D3's SP.

The fact that I'm not hearing much buzz about the beta isn't exactly filling me with excitement.

Considering the backlash Ubisoft had with the always online thing for Assassin's Creed 2 on PC, I can't understand why Blizzard would make the same mistake. Perhaps they aren't aware, or they just don't give a rats ass.

Past history proves it's the latter.

The fact it's Blizzard, who A: have huge experience with running games online, so it'll probably run consistently smooth after a week or so, B. IT'S BLIZZARD THEY COULD RAPE MY DOG AND OLOL, and C. it's a game 99% of everyone is going to be playing online exclusively to begin with.

A friend of mine told me about the open beta in Diablo 3 this weekend, so I decided to give it a try. After downloading the client and spending ages trying to log on to the game servers, I finally managed to get in...
I don't even know what exactly I was expecting, Diablo 3 is actually very faithful to the previous two games, but I guess I wanted to see something a little different this time. The game looks quite nice, but all the locations (I don't know if they're randomly generated or not) start to look a bit too similar after a while, and the battles are a bit too chaotic for me - I can't really see what's going on when the screen is full of explosions and spell effects and breaking stuff, I just move my mouse around and click stuff and then watch things die. I just finished the one "chapter" that the beta version lets you play, and like Dresden pointed out, there hasn't really been much sense of danger, I haven't felt any need for any kind of "tactical" approach, and before the final boss battle I didn't even need any of the multiple health potions that I found along the way.
Anyway, for me the biggest problem is that Diablo 3 doesn't really seem to offer anything that I haven't already seen before. It's not a bad game at all, I wouldn't have spent a few hours on it otherwise, but the beta version failed to impress me enough to buy the game... Perhaps I'll still get it at some point if the online co-op is any good, but for now I think I'll stick with Titan Quest if I'm in the mood for some hack and slash action.

I love the art. I think the game looks gorgeous - painterly, in a dark way. Definitely no complaints in that compartment.
I also realise that while I greatly enjoyed the first two Diablo games, I'll give this one a miss, at least until it's come down in price. The game just doesn't hold my interest. It's well designed, I'm sure, but it's shallow - which I'm okay with, as long as there's something else to capture my interest, like plot or characters. To be fair, I pretty much felt the same about Titan Quest. With a big pile of more immediately interesting games to play, I don't see myself sinking lots of time into this one. I can absolutely see how it'd appeal to others, but here and now I'm not its intended audience.

I'd have to agree, looks lovely.

http://www.zen80200.zen.co.uk/demonhunter.jpgSo far I've played both Demon Hunter and Monk to the end of the Beta, Demon hunter was harder and required more skill, I think, but Monk was more fun to play. The splitting of "Mana" for the Demon Hunter into Hatred and Discipline works well in practice.
I'll definitely be playing through in Single Player first, if you play through with a group people they tend to trigger quests left right and center and you end up with no clue of what's going on from a story point of view - and precious little time to savour the atmosphere of which there is plenty.
It's part 3 of good, shallow fun. Only concern so far is the difficulty - got all the way to the skeleton King with Demon Hunter without so much as touching a health potion and then got pretty much raped. Hmmm. Also experienced a random lag attack when playing in SP, which I can live with for beta but will be less tolerant of if it occurs regularly in retail. Overall though, <3
