Well, I guess they wanted to take any guesswork out of the equation for people who liked the original games but weren't too sure if this was becoming a bit too much like WoW. Thank you blizzard for saving my time and money.

But what if the player makes bad choices? :p
Let them do a mission that gives them a respec, like City of Heroes gives you if they make a major change to a class / power.

As does most other MMOs. And it's a far better solution than completely disallowing off the wall builds and playstyles.

As people have already pointed out, this mostly comes down to design. Hopefully, your gameworld is constructed so that all skills have some use and that it should be theoretically possible to finish the game when a player puts all their characters point into noncombat areas.

Guys, it was sarcasm on how they are limiting player's freedom just in case he does something wrong. Valve, Vita chambers, and so on.

No player assignable attribute points makes the baby Jesus cry.
I'm not thrilled about it, either.
maybe they're going to come up with something like the Dungeon Siege system. you fight with a sword you get more strength. bow for dexterity and so on and so forth. don't know. I wouldn't mind having to train my char so I can equip better stuff in him. it would make him keep his class design more (so no necro with swords and crossbows). of course that's not necessarily a good thing...

Sadly, I'm pretty sure they said right off the bat that the stats will increase automatically when you level up and that any two classes will same level will have same stats.
I can understand where they're coming from to be honest. Diablo 2's stats were simply broken because of the stupid three-difficulty system. Strenght was only needed to wear equipment since most of your damage came from weapon/skills. Dexterity was only needed for max blocking, since most of your hit came from weapon/skills. Energy was not needed at all, and Vit was what everyone was pumping through the roof. For anyone new to the game who tried to apply common sense("I am a Sorceress so Energy is the way to go right?"), this was a death sentence outside Normal, where arguably the real game started.
But instead of fixing this, they're essentially removing it alltogether? Fail.

Or, for a far earlier reference, look at Ultima Online. They did the same thing. This might be interesting; Blizzard might actually try to learn from one of it's predecessors! Then again, they'd probably just bugger it up...

Attribute points are not player-assignable in D3. They’re not in the blizzcon build, but we thought that was just to simplify things for new players at the show. Jay says no, that’s how it is in the game now. His explanation was that it makes items even more important, and that it lets the designers plan a bit better (they can assume players will have at least X in each stat by a given level). You still get attributes, and they will still be required for equipment use, but they are automatically assigned each level up. Thus every Wizard will have the same base str/vit/dex/etc as every other Wizard of the same level. Same for the Barb and WD.
A little part of me just died inside. The last thing we need is an online game that is item-oriented. It is one of the main reasons I stopped playing D2. Once you reach a certain level, everyone expects you to have The Superior Hammer of Mauling, Armor of God (drops rate .0001%), and a full set of all the highest runes and gems somehow socketed into all of your equipment. THIS IS NOT AN MMO, I REFUSE TO FARM ITEMS DAMMIT. Also, this lends to the whole "microtransactions" thing to make the game even more into a money grubbing piece of SHIT.
"Oh, ,can't find the armor you need? Well for just $1.99, you can buy the Sword of Damage, which adds a permanent +20 to your STR. Or, for $5.99 you can get the Super Sword of Damage which will add +40 to your STR. Or, for a lowly monthly payment of just $12.99, you can use the "Fuck You PVP Sword" which can kill anything in one hit, even PvP players..even non-PvP players! Upgrade that to just 15.99 a month and you also get the "Armor of The God-mode cheat" which makes you immune to all damage. You will even get a list of template builds..FREE..to best optimize your character, not that it matters though, since YOU CAN'T CUSTOMIZE THEIR ATTRIBUTES. Thanks for choosing D-Mall, keep forking out the cash, and Fuck you."
