I'm replaying the first diablo at the moment and despite the flaws, most of which are just because it is old, it is an ace game still. It's *very* creepy with the whole church setting, the music is great - I kind of wish they weren't opting for the overly glossed orchestral stuff for D3, as it just makes it feel like every other high budget game.
While I'll definitely be playing it when it comes out, I have to say that the setting more closely resembles Dungeon Siege than Diablo.

Diablo I's ace in the hole, other than the creepy Gothic atmosphere and art style, was the music. It was very dark acoustic/ambient, very reminiscent of
Agalloch and
Opeth's softer works. The Tristram theme is a very impressive piece of music.

I agree with this completely. And Dungeon Siege, while having the same technical ingredients that Diablo did, failed to be compelling on so many levels. I've never played a game that has put me to sleep--except Dungeon Siege, that is.

Only the Tristram theme actually sounded like Opeth; the rest was more of a dark ambient type deal.

Hey, I just noticed something. Female barbarian. Did they say anything about all classes having both sexes? With the switch to 3D it makes sense. When you have one hundred thousand frames to animate*, doing a male and female necromancer isn't high on the todo list.
*Though I understand that the sprites in D1/2 were created using a 3D model, and animated in-game using a technique not unlike stop-motion.
Or just tell me which page this was already discussed on. ;)

Yeah, all the classes will have both a male and female option. As you stated it's far easier to do this with 3D than it is to animate a whole mess of new sprites.

I also hope that this will bring us a REAL difference in monsters, not just color variations.

That would be refreshing. I like RPGs as much as anyone else but I'm getting pretty tired of fighting the same enemies throughout the entire game, exact in every way except attributes and color palette.

Hehehe... why go through the art department when you can just give the hue slider a shove? ;)

It worked for Halo.

Fuck you and fuck the mass-bashing power of internet whenever an opinion is formed in a vocal subgroup going against the general consensus. Turning an argument into ridicule as a way to discredit and mock actively its supporters removes anyone's right to discuss the matter and makes YOU look ridiculous. That kind of behaviour is spreading all over the net like a disease and actually making things worse instead of applying basic principles of respect.
There was a similar thing with Bioshock, except that the subgroup was actually bigger here than the general consensus so the forums didn't explode too much into breaking apart each other's opinion with ridicule.
My first, visceral reaction when I saw the trailer was that there was
indeed too much color everywhere in the game. There was NO BLACK to be seen, in a Diablo game. Something in a character wearing shoulder pads the size of his head made me think World of Warcraft. Huge, epic music made me think of a generic fantasy setting while I actually remembered the original game for the impressive and moody theme. All of that
displeased me as a Diablo fan, and I rapidly came to see that I was certainly not the only one.
You know how a growing community of fans work : they start thinking and over analyzing. Which is great. Because, not only it does bring interesting comparison shots and an insight on what many people hold as the true heart of a game series, but because such things are done for the
love of that said game series.
Actually, you'll find very few hate in that community. Very few people saying that they won't be buying the game if the art direction remains the same. Very few people that weren't genuinely impressed by the gameplay trailer. Very few people that will not somehow try to find a constructive way of getting everyone pleased. So next time you post just check if you're going to say something gratuitous about that community. And then just shut the hell up.
God what am I doing ? Excusing myself for having sincere feelings a certain way about an entertainment medium ?
