The difference doesn't lie in the colours so much as in how they're used and how the textures look. So far, Diablo 3 looks considerably smoother than the previous two games, and I believe it's mainly this smoothness that moves the game's visuals somewhat in the direction of the Warcraft titles. The barbarian looks more gouraud shaded than actually textured, for instance.

Almost as if it had twice the resolution.
Let's hope you can play it in 640x480 for that "gothic" feel.

If you guys can't look forward to something new because it uses more than 256 colours then I hope you never enjoy anything ever again.
Fuck, that's going in the profile.

For fuck's sake, could you at some point take a break from being a stupid dick?
Lord of Destruction didn't automatically have a different, smoother look because it allowed for higher resolution. And people can look at those
Diablo 3 shots and look forward to the game yet not be entirely happy with the changes in art direction. Have you looked at those "What it should look like" pics? I'm not saying that that's exactly what the game *should* look like, but there are other options than drooling fanboys saying, "You're raping the gothic look with your WoW kiddies' stuff!" and your snide, brainless sniping and your suggestion that the only difference between the visual style in
D1 &
D2 and that of the
D3 shots is higher resolution.

I can see the tendencies towards WoW's brighter colors. But even then, D3 leans more towards earth tones than it does towards Warcraft's pastels.
Everything else is completely different. D3 has realistically proportioned characters, deeper detail in the textures, moodier lighting, and overall a more painterly feel than Warcraft. Deep down you can see some slight similarities, probably because they've got the same artists working on D3 as they had on WoW. But comparing them side by side, I don't think they look much alike at all.
I do know that Blizzard has the best artists of any game company ever, though. Everything they put out looks awesome.

One day graphics cards will be powerful enough that they come with a suite of horrid post effects for games, like the ones for video viewing or graphic equaliser presets now. That way people can stick contrasty film grain on whatever they like. Seemed to cheer up that guy above anyway.

Fine, I can try and use actual arguments, though if you failed to notice any difference between these:
You must have cocks for eyes anyway so what good will it do?
It's not a matter of not seeing
any difference, dumbass. They obviously look significantly different (as they should, considering those games came out over four years ago). It's a matter of the similarities between them, and anyone with half and ounce of brains (not you apparently) can see there
are similarities.
Diablo and its sequel had a completely different style than
Warcraft (probably because they were essentially made by a different company, Blizzard North). This game is obviously more of a hybrid of the two franchises when it comes to art, and I don't really think that is a good thing.

Is there an European body which governs that?
Well, I remember different levels of the Dungeon in Diablo having different color hues... there was a yellow one, and a red one... no one complained about it breaking the game's "gothicness"(Which it even isn't in the first place) back then.
Yes, the different levels of
Diablo and especially
Diablo II had different themes. However, the overall
style was still consistent (i.e. moody, creepy, "Diablo-ish").
