But then why did the early screenshots of Return to Castle Wolfenstein look so much better than the finished product? What about Tribes 2? Morrowind? Star Wars Galaxies?

They didn't have the whole level built, just chunks to show off so they used high-res textures/high poly models, then they built the whole levels and realised the memory request was too high, so they cut back on texture size and polygon count in models.
That's what I think. :erm:
