Do this: Change your rendering device from dx3d to software, and then back. You'll have to do this everytime you play. The option is under display.
I have the same problems on my Acer (game runs too fast, sound), doing the above fixes it.

That sounds outlandishly insane, but given that A) it's a laptop, and B) it's an Acer, you may very well have a point. I'll just have to reinstall the damned thing again to try it out. Thanks for pointing it out, I'd never have guessed to try that in a million years.
I'll report back.

What's with the rationalizing? No wonder you haven't been able to play the game yet.
Just do it :joke: It worked for me, it'll probably work for you.

I was not aware of that, mainly since I haven't played Unreal. But it does open up a whole new set of Googlisms I hadn't previousy thought of.

Make sure vsync is on. I've heard several people say that doing this solves the problem with conversations getting chopped off.

At least, it works for me. I was having the same problem (windows vista laptop, nvidia video card, no idea what sound card). So, now, every time I open Deus Ex, I tell it to change renderers. Then, on the list of renderers (the whole list, not just the "Compatible" list), I choose OpenGL. The game boots (this is a fast booting program anyway), and the sound works just fine.
Hope this helps, don't really care if it doesn't. Have fun.

Hey! I found another fix for this, for people with a dual-core processor.
If the other methods discussed fail to fix the error or exacerbate the issue (i had to reinstall the game due to the default settings getting even more messed up) then try going to task manage, right clicking Deus Ex and then click "set affinity". Setting the game to only use one cpu seemed to fix the issue.

I'm using Windows 7 and using a Sound Blaster and this worked for me:
Open your DuesEx folder, go in to system and open "deusex.ini"
Find the section that says: [Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem]
In that section their will be a line that says "Latency=40"
Change it to read "Latency=60"
Close the file (saying yes to save)
Restart DeusEx and the sound works fine :)
