Hello people!!!
Especially Deus Ex Gamers, Moders and Mappers!!!!
I have a good news for you))
Here is new OpenGL renderer for Deus Ex, and it makes graphics really cool (also
includes new Direct3D renderer, but I don't recommend it).
You can use textures up to 4096 dpi (!!!!)
You can download hires textures demo map from here:
(
http://skyward.sitesled.com)
In a 2 weeks I'm planning to open that site. This will be about Skyward modification by me (Kronos).

The hi-res textures look very nice, but 4096dpi is not a measurement of texture size. I assume you mean 4096x4096 pixels is the maximum supported texture size?
Kronos83 on 28/11/2006 at 00:12
Yes, i mean 4096x4096. This is the maximum size that supports videocards. And with that new (not mine) driver we can use also realistic 32-bit lighting system, create coll realistic fog... Texturex have DXT1 format, but then you cannot open map in Editor. If they have normal RGB format, you can import them into editor and work with. But compressed DXT1 textures have some advantages in speed.

I don't see anything in the documentation for the Improved OpenGL Renderer that suggests it allows better lighting and fog... could you explain the improvements it allows in these areas?
Kronos83 on 28/11/2006 at 09:39
Actually it's not mine renderer, I only made a demomap)))
Here is site to this renderer (
http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/)
Fog looks more realistic cause this driver uses 16 or 32 bit lighting textures.

This is nothing new (Deus Ex version of utglr has been around for a very long time), but your map demonstrating the big textures is rather cool.
I found this rendering library to be pretty good, working even better than the default D3D renderer on my ATI graphics card - and the best (only ;)) way to go to play DX on Linux.
We've yet to see its modding-usefulness in a real FM or mod though.

Yeah, I've been playing through Deus Ex with it for a couple of weeks now. It's a good improvement in several respects - particularly anti-aliasing support and better detail textures. The latter is accomplished by mixing another smaller-scale copy of the detail texture in behind the regular detail texture when you get close enough to the surface.
What I would love to see is a renderer that improves the UT engine's godawful gouraud shading on models. That should be something that's possible to do on the renderer-driver side, without requiring architectural changes to higher-level components of the engine.
That said higher-poly models and higher-detail textures do help this look better, but you still get the problem of model lighting fading to complete black in directions where there is no direct lightsource.
PS, the hi-res textures are very nice Kronos ;)

Hmm. Any place I could bitch in about that?
Using the enhanced OpenGL driver just gets me a blank screen in Deus Ex. I can still hear the game and even the menu mouseover clicks.
Hrm. Same issue with the D3D8.

Does this new driver fix the awful banding/blocking artifacts in foggy areas?
Vigil on 28/11/2006 at 17:33
I haven't noticed any significant banding in foggy areas, so I suppose so (haven't compared it though).
However, it does still have the problem that reflections of foggy surfaces will often flicker between fogged and unfogged as you move. This is most noticeable in the freezing compartments in the Lucky Money and the Old China Hand.
