It's out! And it turns out that it requires having Deus Ex on Steam. I only have the box copy though. Which would have been a convenient excuse for me not to have to play this, but then it turns out that Deus Ex is currently 80% off at the moment. Dammit! Installing...

I'm not thrilled either about the requirement for a Steam version of DX GOTY. I also own an original DX GOTY edition and don't really want to play DX through Steam. The mod itself is free and can be downloaded standalone from ModDB or from their server. So why make it available only for Steam GOTY editions? Is that all they had to test against?

That seems to be the result of their "deal" with Square Enix, to (
http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-revision/news/releasing-soon1) "make something cool happen". That "something cool" appears to be them getting shafted by a big publisher who's going to rip all the benefits of their hard work over the last 7 years. As well as pissing off half their targeted audience and ripping off the other half. Oh and pushing back the release of the mod four months. Really dick move on the part of Square, and really stupid move on their part for getting in touch with them in the first place. I doubt it will boost the success of the mod in any way. I mean it's a mod for a twelve-year-old game. What do they expect? They'll get the usual 20,000 hardcore players. I doubt that stunt will entice any of the dudebros waiting for DX:MD to try out a "mod".
At least I'm glad it was released at all, for a while there it seemed like it had been shut down. Can't wait to try it out.

That post was not very straightforward about what was going on. But it suggested that their mod content may have infringed on some Square Enix IP. Obviously that's something important for them to sort out. If the "deal" is that Square Enix agree not to be dicks and try to take the mod down for copyright infringement, and in return the mod requires a Steam copy of DX, then I think it's a pretty good deal actually.

My money is that your "angry anti-Steam audience" is the vocal minority by a huge margin.

Face reality, EVERY mod EVER results in the current game publishers reaping the benefits of "homebrew developers' free labour". It's been well documented for YEARS that mods do prolong the sales tail end of PC games at retail. It's no different here.

Of course if Square Enix initiated the dialogue with the threat of a cease and desist letter, it makes sense that they would comply. But I understood it as them contacting Square Enix first out of some misguided sense of obligation, and getting needlessly tangled in corporate legalese.

It's a matter of principle, not a question of amount. But it's not something a shill like you would understand.

Except it's rarely been done in such a cynical, opportunistic way.
Anyway, the mod was released that's all that matters. Has anyone had time to try it yet? According to the Steam reviews there seems to be a few performance issues, which is surprising for such an old game.

Actually I already own the Steam version, but it's good to hear for those who don't.

Bizarre rants aside... anyone actually playing this yet? If so, what do you think?

Just finished downloading it now, I'll post my impressions once I've had a good poke about.
