DX took me a few hours before I actually "got" it. I started not liking it, and shortly came to believe that it is easily one of the best games ever, and completely different than anything else out there.
If you have broadband you can get it from direct2drive for $10. I got more hours of fun for $10 than any game I've paid $50 for!

I picked up DX1 for £5, and the only title i've ever got as much use out of as DX is Civ3. DX:IW isnt a bad game, but is basically a dumbed-down-so-it'll-run-on-consoles game, and as such I dont much like it

I picked up DX after seeing it in the local game shops bargain bin for AU$10. I thought "what the hell, its supposed to be a classic. I'll give it a shot"
anyway long story short DX turned out to be one of my all time favorite games. The graphics were no where near as primitive as I had thought... in fact when run at high resolution with forced 4x Anti Aliasing and 8x Anisotropic filtering (thank you 9800pro) it looks just as good as any gave iv'e played, arguably better.
After finnishing it a number of times I decided to get Invisable war. I tried to like it..... I really did. In the end I could not bear to play for more than 30 seconds at a time. The consolised inventory system made me want to cry. As did the new thrown-object physics. Eveything just felt wrong in a really perverse way.... I couldn't take it.
Combine that with its random crashes, its refusal to remember my graphics settings every time I play, and the fact that I cant Alt+Tab out and back without it becoming unstable......
Maybe if I ever get it running properly I will give it another shot. Untill then, I'm in no rush.

I also tried liking it .. and I'm quite immersed by now. Of course it's far from DX1, but IMO it's better than a lot of other games. And if I didn't have the example of DX1 (in terms of inventory organisation, weapons modification, skills, augs aso), I guess I'd be excited.
It's far from being as good as DX1, but it still somehow manages to capture the good old feeling.

Invisible War's pathetic excuse for a faction system, alone, was enough to make me dislike it.
The horrible level design definitely sealed the deal for me, though.

I played the first Deus Ex when it came out and loved it though it didn't have very good graphics. Their was so much to do and many way to accomplish your objectives and you have tons of gizmos and weapons and upgrades ect ect. Invisible was really cool the first 5 min because of the graphics but I feel as if the game took huge leaps backward from the first one. It had a good atmosphere though so that was good. Unfortunately IW went the same way as Thief 3 did. Down the toilet. I feel as if gameplay is going backwards getting worse and worse and getting rid of very basic elements for example the ammo. The same ammo for every gun drove me nuts! I'm keeping the game though so I can have a friend for the first Deus Ex on my shelf.

Just buy Deus Ex for at direct2drive.com if you can't find it anywhere. It will be the best $10 you ever spend. It took me a few hours of playing to get the "groove" but man oh man, easily one of the best games ever. I'm still playing DX:IW, not really that far into it. Seems really good, but it's still kind of missing the "magic" to me...

While DX1 had a more limited environment to make choices it did so in a much more open space, while DX:IW focused on near-complete freedom of choice in a more closed environment.

Just tried playing IW again today.... I'm afraid it's just not going to happen... ever.
good thing I didnt pay for it, otherwise it would probably be in the microwave as we speak. I'm serious. A tear comes to my eye that such a game is even remotley associated with DX.
After 5 minutes of play I could already make a list of things that annoyed me at least 30 entries long. In the end I can't even give the game a chance becasue every second I play is pure frustration.

lol, strange. When I played the first DX however, after 3 minutes for me I wanted to give up on it. Knowing now what a bad decision that would have been on my behalf, I now give any game plenty of work before making any immediate decisions on it.
