well, i guess i should say that putting world textures on high (low and med work) makes it unbearable to play on my friend's computer(chop chop chop chop). but he can crank everything else up and it's great.
which strikes me as odd because he basically has the same computer i did when i first played DX when it came out, and i cranked everything, but kept the resolution low. his comp is this:
Windows ME (i had 98)
Geforce4 MX420 64mb AGP (i had a TNT\2....so that's just crazy)
Pent 3 700mhz
383.3 mb ram (or some crazy convoluted number)
i upgraded all of his drivers, and that didn't help. so it just strikes me as odd. because if you've ever put world textures on anything but high the game looks circa '98. and he can run morrowind like a dream.....my only thought was that it might be windows ME MEssing with him(hyuck hyuck), but i don't really know.

Well, my driver's are all reasonably recent, and my comp is an Athlon XP 2100, 512 DDR ram, GFti4400, and I have exactly the same problem.
I have no idea why.
I can run almost any modern game on it's highest setting's ... well, that's getting to be less true now ... but still, my comp run's fine, just not with Deus Ex.
It's a pity: I don't really mind playing with medium detail textures ... but high detail does make a huge difference.

Try using OpenGL instead of Direct3D. I think that helped me when I was having some problems. Sorry I can't be more specific but it's been a while since I played. Stupid school.....

yeah, i remember i tried enabling Open GL, but it said it wasn't recognized. then i installed the new drivers and it said it added O\GL support....so i'll tell him to try that. more in a second.

I was playing DX on ME several times with no problems...

If you have to use the Direct3d mode make sure the game is patched - its a real flaw with the original version that the d3d mode sucked - the patched version isn't perfect but its a lot better.
By the way, a Geforce 4MX420 isn't *that* much better than a TNT2 Ultra at resolutions under 1024x768, I don't think.

Download the Official Patch guys, It will make OpenGL work instead of Direct3D. Then you should run fine. Same thing happens on my
P3 550 Mhz
GeForce 4 MX 440 AGP 64MB
256 Mb Ram
Win XP
Err.. Just seeing ACT SMILEY's post. Yeah, get the patch.
