RedSun is serious in atmosphere but light-hearted with its readables. It was an eclectic mix that worked well.
By premise I'm talking about (

"Perhaps our greatest mistake was to tell people that The Nameless Mod was inspired by a real community that existed on the internet at one point in time. I suspect people in general would be a lot more susceptible to our quirky cyberspace setting if they thought we'd just invented it as a Snow Crash-esque sci-fi take on the internet, because then they wouldn't associate us with the reviled genre of "forum fan fiction" to begin with, and once playing the game, they wouldn't be expecting in-jokes everywhere. "I'm "people" and not "people" at the same time. It's silly as all hell to me to base it, or at least give the appearance that it's based on an insulated community. But I never dismissed it, I think I made it plenty clear that I'd play it and judge it accordingly. That's fair enough in my book eh?

All the pitch-black and clone-stamped level design in RedSun irritated the piss out of me. Also the lack of an actual ending. Ugh.

"That's pretty much the reason why I dismissed it at first. But once I had read enough positive comments from people here whose opinions I trust, I gave it a shot. And it's the best thing I've played this year. If anything, I wished it had been less serious and more authentic to the forum cyberspace concept.

From my perspective it's silly as hell to make that assumption.
I'll admit that I have a somewhat unique perspective. I felt like I was familiar with the community in question (I wasn't) so if I didn't get something I assumed it was part of the fiction, not based on the community.
It was an incorrect and self centered way to look at things, but it worked out well for me. Because that makes it more like Aliens than anything else. In Aliens the first names of all but a few characters (Ellen Ripley, Rebecca 'Newt' Jorden, Dwayne Hicks, Carter Burke) are taken directly from their actors. No one ever thinks Aliens is silly because of that. As far as I know.

Not dismissed is better than dismissed, but worse than waiting to experience before making judgments as to tone.

It would really be hilarious if they do a better prequel than DX3

Its premise is certain not serious at all. Also it's kinda silly comparing a sp mod to a mp mod, eh?
I wasn't talking about premise or backstory - and I didn't think that's what you were talking about when you said "non-serious mod." I meant a mod that has high standards of professionalism and presentation (ie voice acting) - Nameless Mod has loads more of that than Redsun 2020 - roughly on par with the level of seriousness in the later Counter Strike mods. Ie a "serious effort"
Even still, the Nameless mod does a lot better a job of establishing atmosphere, backstory , and character depth than RedSun (once again, no offense to Redsun, it's a great mod).
