Ah, see, it must just be a question of "which did you play first?" because I find it harder to blackjack people in Thief than batoning them in DX. Put at least one level into melee skill or melee aug, though, it helps.

Originally posted by Alneyan Out of idle curiosity, do you often have to reload when playing with this approach? I will probably give it a try to the "no-damage" style sooner or later, or perhaps even the "no save" (except to prevent a computer crash, too likely) playstyle if I do feel that courageous. *Snickers* Yes, shooting down troopers a good click away does require courage. ;)
I didn't have to reload that much. I ended up reloading more to see how NPC would respond in certain situations than anything else. I always save like a fucker anyway just because I don't like losing my game (I personally think that gaming should be more about the experience of the game itself, not the challenges you can create due to things which aren't actually built into the "gaming" bit of it. D&D would call it "meta-game" thinking, or thinking outside the game.). No-damage is a lot of fun though, it makes you think a lot more than you normally would.

The prod's big advantage is that it works whether the target is alarmed or not; you can simply run at them, prodding madly, and they will fall down eventually. If the prod existed in 'Thief', 'Thief' would be a lot easier.
I agree that the blackjack is superior to the baton, although the baton is handly for smashing open all the crates. Perhaps when somebody comes up with a Grand Unified Theory linking the worlds of 'Thief' and 'Deus Ex' together - like the 80s Asimov 'Robot' novels - Garrett will be able to mock both the size and utility of Denton's puny baton. Granted, it glistens and it's extendable, but the blackjack is knobblier, if that is a world.
The fire extinguisher can also stun enemies for a brief period of time, I believe, although as with the pepper spray it's pointless unless you just like torturing them before you deliver the coup-de-grace.

I couldn't resist. As a (relative) expert on both games, I thought I'd add a few comments.
I'm one of the people that believes a light gem is crucial to these kinds of stealth games. The Thief gem works extremely well, but in DX, you have no sort of clue as to how well hidden in shadow you are. The best way I've determined to find out whether or not you're invisible in shadow... is to look at an enemy in a shadow. If you can't see them in a certain shadow, and you stand at the same spot, enemies won't see you either. Unfortunately... not every shadow has an enemy in it.
Like BlackCapedManX said, in DX, the important thing about hiding is line of sight. Since you can't rely on shadows (despite much of what I've read on these forums) just hide behind crates and such. (Note that enemies can see you leaning, unlike in Thief where you remain in your shadow.) But, the good thing is, the enemies in DX have a longer "grace period" kind of time. In Thief, you might have to dash across a lighted area and hope no one sees you. Comparatively, in DX, you can stand in front of someone for quite a while before they start to do their "What was that?" routine.
I had trouble my first time through stealth training in DX too, but it's easy now. Just make sure to stay behind them. Throwing objects does work as distractions, they just work a little differently than in Thief. When enemies hear something, they'll pause and look around, then they'll run toward the noise, then pause and look around, etc. This happens in Thief too. Enemies in Thief just don't pause as often.
The riot prod does not have unlimited ammo, but if you want a "blackjack," the baton works exactly like it (other than the fact that if you keep beating them while they're alerted, they go unconscious as opposed to dying as in Thief). I find them both to be about the same in terms of difficulty. The hard part in DX is that they notice your footsteps much further than in Thief, so sneaking up is difficult, but if you crouch, it eliminates all sound, unlike in Thief where it only eliminates most sound.
Anyway, hope this helps.

For *ANY* melee weapon in Deus Ex, lethal and nonlethal, hitting the small of their back does the most damage. For nonlethal weapons, this is a guaranteed takedown for any enemy except for bosses (yes, even MIBs and Commandos!). For lethal, it generally takes you one or two hits, except when you're using the combat knife-- the worst melee weapon in the game. Don't use the combat knife.

Actually,I finished the game on my first go, All sneak kills, and without losing and drop of pixalated blood. (Sarcasm is great).
Why is there always at least one person who hs to be better than everyone else at something.
Get over yourselves, its only a game
(It may be the best game ever made, but its still only a game)

What light gem?
From where do you download this stuff (the gem mod?)?

i've never had problems sneaking in deus ex. i have both thief 1 and 2 and have played splinter cell so i'm fairly familiar with the stealth level/light gem mechanic. it's really not a biggy the problems you're having, it's just that the way sneaking works in deus ex and thief is a bit different.
in thief the important thing is light levels and keeping silent. in deux ex its also keeping silent but, imho, being behind cover or out of the line of sight of a guard is more important. in deus ex, guards can still spot you even if you're camped out someplace dark if you're in their line of sight. it's a different mechanic but still exploitable. i've been able to knock out all the guards in a room without anyone being the wiser by making sure all of them had their backs turned to me whenever i took one of them out. as long as they have their backs turned to each other you can sneak between them and stun prod them into dreamland.
deus ex is a different game. don't expect to be able to play it exactly like you play thief.
