I bought Deus Ex a long time ago and downloaded and installed the lightgem they created for it. I remmember i had to mess with the dumb thing for about an hour before i finally got it to work. Anyways, i quit playing Deus Ex, and uninstalled it along time ago. Tonight i had the urge to start again, and i found the Lightgem on my system, and tried installing it. Guess what, it doesn't work:mad: I even have the patch they suggested might fix a problem with it, and it still doesn't work. Can somone tell me if i need to rename a file or somthing?
P.S. - Please don't give me the "lightgem is lame and sucks" speech, ive read it a hundred time. :ebil:

I'm in the same boat as you, Thief! A friend let me 'borrow' the game (it's already been some years, and I doubt he'll ever come to claim it) and, except for a cursory look, it's been collecting dust. I was bored today so I installed it again and went through the training exercises, failing miserably when it came to evading the guards. From a Thief fan perspective and one used to stealth, I find it atrocious anyone can sneak without something similar to Thief's light gem. Anyway, I finally finished that by using one of the chameleon suits (whatever they're called). Only now I can't seem to walk around too stealthily in the first mission NYC. They suggest to crouch and always stay behind enemies, etc., and yet when I'm crouched I move considerably slower than them, so by the time I'm making progress, they turn around, notice me, and start shooting :cheeky:. So right now I'm just wishing for a good old blackjack, and wondering if it gets any 'easier' (I'm already on Easy difficulty, admittedly) to sneak later on by getting biomods, training skills or whatnot. Actually, the last and first time I played this I got pissed off really quick from taking the stealthy approach also, and then went on a rampage after learning how to use the cheats. It's hilarious to get JC drunk or high using forties and vials of crack. What a winning combo :thumb:
Just thought I'd do a little ranting. Anywhere I can get this light gem mod, btw? Oh heck, I'll probably just do a search for it.
Hang in there, or, as I'll probably do, give up and go to a good Thief FM :thumb:

wow what a qoincident!
I too had extreme difficulty getting through the "evading guards" part of the training when i played Deus Ex for the first time. But after i pissed away about a halfhour reloading and trying again, i finally made it. Two days ago, i was going through the training, and got to that same point again, this time i knew better than to waste my time, and got on ttlg and posted this:ebil: . Anyways, coming from two Thief nuts, i think we can both agree that the whole experience has been rather disappointing. Like you, all i kept wanting was to go as fast as the enemy whilst crouching, and if i wa forced to sneak up behind them, have some slack on the ai hearing. When i was playing the game with the lightgem along time ago however, i got about halfway through the game before losing intrest, its actually halfway decent with the lightgem and all. I think the thing with us, is that we are playing too much from a stealth perspective, maybe they want you to lean more towards the "guns blazing" attitude, like all my freinds do. In conclusion, all i can say is that i sincerly hope that these guys know what they're doing with Thief3. Coming from two very excellent prequils, they have alot to live up to. Cheerz:thumb:

This was the first I heard of a light gem for DX and ended up with the same problems as everyone else plus this one. Skirts and plants disappear! Sadly, the character models and skins aren't that great. :p
...and the chick missing her abdomen... well, that's just nuts.

People had trouble in the stealth training?
:weird:
I got through the first time, albeit, with a few heart palpitations. I didn't even notice the camo suit until the third time I snuck by them. If you stop thinking in the Thief way of sneaking and follow directions, it's rather easy to sneak up behind any AI.

Why thank you for informing two obviously inferior
thieves how to sneak. Honestly, it would be fine if they offered a decent light gem and some kind of mod for those of a stealthy disposition. I was in complete shadow, afaik, and one of the guards could see me; I just figured I'd wait till he walked past. Also, the instructor told me to distract them with flasks and other things, yet when I threw a flask it only went a few feet and only caused the AI to stop there.. I wanted to throw it much further and lure him away (as in Thief). You
do realize, again, that we're coming from a Thief background, right? No knocking DX, I just can't see being a complete stealth agent with the variables DX throws at me, especially when I have to use lethal force (i.e., not enough ammo given for stun gun). I swear someone should mod it to include a blackjack :laff:. The thing is, I
did follow directions. I'm not pretentious enough to apply all my Thief fundamentals to DX, though I'd think some of them would work. As Thief13x states, it's annoying trying to sneak up behind an AI and only gaining on them in the slightest degree. C'mon, JC Denton, you're a stealthy thief now!
And I'm still wondering who is looking forward to DX3; I guess the few who are actually enjoying the second one :laff:

You do realize you have a regular prod at your disposal with unlimited ammo? I believe it can be found on the first UNATCO trooper corpse at Liberty Island. It works somewhat like the blackjack, except that you will have to be accurate when striking as the enemy will not always go down. I forgot which part should be targetted though. Silly me.
There are three other weapons used for non-lethal take downs, the riot prod (this one always works, but the ammo *is* limited), the mini crossbow (with enough ammo, that is, compared to the two other weapons) and a lachrymatory pistol, with *very* little ammo.
You should check other threats about the non-lethal approach, or even the no-damage playstyle. I wish you well if you take the challenge, especially the latter one. ;)

The idea in DX, isn't as much hiding in shadows, as it is hiding from FOV. If they have a wall between you and them, they're much less likely to see you. Since DX is set in the future, you'd have to imagine they'd be some sort of imformal training such "when you hear a noise, or are have your fellow soldiers being shot down left and right LOOK IN THE FUCKING SHADOWS!" plus later in the game there are cybornetic enemies which I'm sure have to have some form of nightvision.
As for the stealth course, it's actually a lot harder than it needs to be because it actually requires you to follow in the enemies wake, as opposed to waiting until they're somewhere far away and then waltzing by, or using the many conveniently placed mansized air ducts which seem to come standard in modern buildings. Again the main idea is to stay out of their FOV, and stay crouched when you need to be close to them, otherwise just wait until they're nowhere near and then get by. In the actual stealth course what I do is hide at the bottom of the stairway, watching just around the corner, wait for the guard patroling the hall adjacent to the stair to pass by going toward the door you need to leave by, and then follow just behind him, crouched, until he turns in the little hall perpendicular to the one you've been following him on, then continue to crouch until your at the end of the hall you started at then stand and run to the door.
And when in the world do you have to use leathal force? I've beaten the whole game leaving everyone but two of my enemies alive and concious. The whole premise of stealth is not being seen, since when do you have to have people unconscious (or dead) to not be seen?

Out of idle curiosity, do you often have to reload when playing with this approach? I will probably give it a try to the "no-damage" style sooner or later, or perhaps even the "no save" (except to prevent a computer crash, too likely) playstyle if I do feel that courageous. *Snickers* Yes, shooting down troopers a good click away does require courage. ;)

Do you mean the pepper spray? You still need to take them down using something else, that just immobilises them briefly.
Batoning people is much harder than using the blackjack in Thief. But I've ghosted some missions before.
