No, actually body awareness discussions aren't my speciality... but if you say so...

Scan complete. You are only minimally biomodified. We can help correct this.
or perhaps
Got fired. Again. Time to start drinkin'.
Seriously, I thought it was a great game, not DX, but still great, and the sounds were my favourite part of it. And as for body awareness, a lot of people on other forums for other games (such as HL2) pine for fully body rendering, but they obviously haven't played DX or TDS, because being able to see your feet is a real pain in the arse. I felt, especially in TDS, that I was running through sludge, partly due to low framerates and partly due to the fact that every collision with every knife and fork laying on the ground had to be rendered. When we all have 5 gigs of RAM, cards that render physics seperately from graphics, dual core computers with a bus speed of beyond current processor speeds, then sure, let's do full body rendering, but until then it's a waste.

The problem in TDS wasn't the full body rendering, it was how they chose to code the player's interaction with the game world.
They chose poorly.

That makes sense...
Well, we are moaning about poor physics in TDS, but I am sure that most 3D games have physics model issues. Er, not that I play many modern FPS', but for example FEAR, a high-profile game from a famed developer, has not so believable physical model. Yes, the character is quite convenient to navigate and the body awareness feels quite natural, but the collissions with objects is not so. For example, you just bump a bit into a soda can on the floor and it starts spinning, or you just run by an office desk on which many objects are standing and they start to shake like if they suffered a strong wind blow. Every slight movement near objects makes noise and it's quite disturbing. And I can't forget about one particular physics bug, which caused a desk lamp to spin wildly around axis, if I bumped into it and it fell on the ground. It was quite a chilling experience to observe such innatural behavior in a game with such paranormal theme though...
Now I'm playing Vampire Bloodlines for the first time. Pity the main character has no actual body you could view in first person mode. Physics bugs also. I understand that the Source engine wasn't as polished like in HL2. All in all, this is one of the buggiest commercial games ever released, despite it's obvious qualities.
Doom 3 seems to be quite flawless in the physics area... amnd that's because because it doesn't show any player-object collisions, you can't pick up anything and throw it away, bumping into objects doesn't cause them move, walking over small objects on the floor doesn't cause the player model to jump like wild rabbit. :erg:
When gamers have no physical model in a game, they whine there isn't any, and when they do, they whine over physics bugs. Oh well. Gamers.

Never really had trouble with getting stuck, but it does feel like Garret has glue under his shoes from time to time. Never had any trouble in DX:IW, didn't even know the whole body awareness thing was implemented in that game as well.
ZylonBane on 6/6/2006 at 14:18
It wasn't.
But DX:IW had its own physics problems. Apparently I started with the hidden "Juggernaut" upgrade, because just bumping into anything not nailed down would send it flying. Felt like I was the proverbial bull in a china shop.

I loved throwing bodies three stories in the air.
For about 5 minutes.

Actually, I felt that this was allegorical for your character's immense powers, and his difficulty in learning how to control these powers.
Or not.

Or a big iron ball attached to his legs with a chain.
And more annoying thing is turning the body in first person. If you look to side and decide to go into that direction, the body lags to turn and wallk to that direction. It's just a short moment, but it's still quite annoying, moving like a slug.

Ok, only a few minutes of entertainment, sure. But five minutes spent flinging everyone's favourite Infolink-spamming twunt Tracer Tong into the air and firing missiles at him is quality entertainment, in my book..
