Hey all, I'm new here but I really love the original Deus Ex since I first started playing it a year or so ago.
I was wondering, however, about the sequel Invisible War. As it's set in the Deus Ex universe I'm really interested in playing it but, as I have heard a lot of people have complained about it, I kind of wanted to hear some opinions about it - and this seemed the best place to look!:thumb: So, in conclusion, how is it? Is it worth playing?

If you look back at older discussions on the forums you'll find more opinions that you ever wanted on the subject.
Bottom line: some people like it, some people hate it.
My opinion: it's a decent enough game, but not nearly as good as the original.

Is it worth playing?
Yes.
is it worth considering a true sequal?
Depends on what you're looking for.
Crucially - it's not really set in the same universe: it's set in a kind of almost-post-apocalyptic variant of the universe, and featuring few of the same characters (who mostly have fewer lines of less interesting content).
It's still kind of fun - it's just so very different that it wasn't what a lot of us wanted (myself included).

It's like a futuristic version of NOLF.
"Hi, I'm a... uhh... visitor. Please ignore the explosions you heard out in the hallway. Can I play with your super-secret prototype laser cannon?"
"I don't see why not!"

As has been said, it depends on what you want to see. What you loved about the first game. For most it was the...more intelligent approach to playing a game & imo the plot and dialogues.
Few of which seem to have made it to IW. Hugely simplified gameplay, repetitive tasks for little reward. About two hours into the game I'd get bored and often found myself saving & going on a killing spree.
What few good parts of the game are killed by the load zones.

The first game is my favourite game of all time, and I was obsessed about Invisible War before it came out. At the time that it eventually did, I wasn't in a situation to be able to play it, and for absolute ages I didn't play it and so didn't have a personal opinion on it. Meanwhile, I witnessed the massive outrage that was going on on most fan forums. While there were people who liked it, most really really didn't like it. Anyway, by the time I did get my hands on it, I ended up being able to enjoy it for what it is.
So I say if you are looking for the same kind of game as the first, you'll be disappointed. It's possible to like it but you'll have to be pretty forgiving and trying to make the most of it. A lot of the issues people had at the time it came out were technical issues. A lot of fixes and tweaks have since been found and are available, furthermore the average PC is much better now than it was then so you'll have less irritation with things like load times if you have a decent setup.
I found it quite easy most of the time too, so just enjoy it while it lasts. You mention just being interested because it's set in the same unvierse, that's what drew me in too. It's still nowhere near as engrossing a world as what the first game presented.

DX:IW is worth playing, but pales in comparison to DX. The key to enjoying it is to not take it too seriously. The story doesn't hold together that well at times and the game gives you lots of choices but none of them matter. So it's best to just do what you feel like doing and don't think too hard about how your actions fit with the plot. In other words, don't role play. And make sure you set the difficulty high otherwise you'll find the game to be too easy and short.

Thanks for the advice guys. I guess the consensus is that I should give it a try but don't expect too much;)
I heard that IW did pretty badly sales-wise as well, and given Ion Storm's demise the chance of their ever being another sequel is pretty much nill, right?:(

IW is... a very good example how a potential of brilliance can be wasted. :(
