Finally, no more 'special limited edition' of Deus Ex for me, I'm pretty sure I have the real version this time. :cheeky: I stumbled across it in the same computer game store where I found Thief 2 way back when. Only one CD, so I very highly doubt it's the GOTY edition. But, as far as I'm concerned, when you stumble across a game like Deus Ex, you don't turn your back on it. :)
My minor question is about what I should do about patching the game. I searched a bit, and it's probably because I'm half asleep that I'm not getting anywhere. I think it's version 1003C, when I've got the CD in the drive that's part of the name. So, what patch should I be going for, and is there a half decent place to download it from aside from Fileplanet? I cannot for the life of me get the 'lil bugger to even start downloading from there. :erm:
I can't wait, I can finally play the game through now! :cheeky: I didn't play much of the game after I found out I wasn't going to be able to finish it, so you guys may have to put up with a newbie journal. ;) I should probably rest up now, though, I haven't really slept in 2 days, and I have a funny feeling I may not want to deal with that annoying little thing called sleep when I dive into the world of Deus Ex.:ebil:

1. First off, the GOTY edition was one CD... except some US ones which have a soundtrack CD. As far as I know,
See the wrench in the shadows? isn't in the US :p
2. 1014f is an old patch. What you need is 1112fm:
(

Which you only really need if you want to play online or install mods.

I wonder if I do have the GOTY edition then. I didn't get a jewel case, just the CD, so how would I find out about which version I've got?
Ah, screw the wait, I'll install the patch whenever I take my first break from Deus Ex, I can't stand not playing it. :cheeky:

Bad news... it is technically IMPOSSIBLE to complete DX melee-only... ;)

I'll have to check that out when I'm done with my first run through.
Okay, let's see here. I said I was going to do a newbies journal, so I better damn well get one rolling here! I wrote the newbie journal entry for training when I just finished it, but everything from Liberty Island on is from earlier today when I dove into Deus Ex again.
Everything went well, I had trouble getting the damn door unlocked with the key, but I got through it okay once I figured out I was supposed to left-click. :laff: I kept getting caught on the stealth course, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as when I wandered into the final course.
I saw boxes with my initials on them, and wandered over. Jaime gave me a warning along the lines of, 'don't throw the crates while standing up, I don't want to have to reattach your arms.' Well, I did it anyway. SPLAT! My legs went bye-bye, so I finished off the course slithering across the floor.
Once I checked out the holograms, I guess because I was so close to the floor, I stumbled across a piece of the wall that didn't look quite right, and then stumbled across a secret room! I half expected a quote scroll there, a la Thief 1, but no such luck. Ah well.
Liberty Island was really, really fun, I've played it through around 4-5 times already, so I knew that I could make a bee-line for the front door of the monument ruins, take out the 'bot, knock out the fellos patrolling nearby, then log into the security machines and turn the turrets again my enemies. After the turrets had finished their job and the blood was finished pooling, I went in and knocked out the survivors, and after getting Gunther out, wrapped up the mission quickly and quietly, and bloodlessly.
Once I’d finished there and went into downtown New York, I went to Battery Park. It’s my 3rd time through here, I played through here in the ‘Special Limited Edition’ *cough* as well as the demo. I dealt with Battery Park blowing away everything that moved, I’m sure when I track down Paul he’ll be mighty upset with me. ;)
I dealt with the subway station as carefully as I could, and didn’t loose a single hostage. I moved all the boxes of TNT out of the way, and then, after taking cover, blew all 5-6 boxes away at once. The first few times I got an e-mail saying: “I can’t believe what I just saw!! Those were innocents!!” Yeah, well, now they’re little chunks on the floor. I tried again until I detonated all the TNT and didn’t kill anyone, then moved onto Hell’s Kitchen.
Once there, I did bloody well everything I possibly could. I took care of the Ton Hotel, I dealt with everything possible in the bar, I freed the Smuggler’s friend, so on, so forth. I really love this area of town, you get to really see what life is like, you get to see the chaos the Gray Death caused . . .
Masterpiece. :ebil:
I made an incredibly stupid mistake back in the place where the Smuggler’s friend was being held, I found something with a name similar to ‘mini-tank-destroyer,’ and ditched the GEP gun for it. After a while, I got the urge to blow people into small chunks with my new toy, and when I pulled it out, I discovered I had no ammo for it, and I’m not familiar enough with Hell’s Kitchen to get back there. D’oh!
After I went back to headquarters, those ‘bodyguards’ kinda spooked me. Reminded me of the Agents off the Matrix, for some reason. I wanted to try out the GEP gun on them, but naturally, I forgot it back in Hell’s Kitchen. When Anna Navara spoke with Manderly about the assassination, I immediately thought that I was going to be sent to assassinate my brother. I don't know if I'm right about that yet, and if anyone spoils me on this, I will personally hunt them down with my crescent wrench and burn the body.
I’ve been working my way through the Mole tunnels, they’re okay, that kid telling me they were ready for me and going to kill me freaked me out, but hey, for every disturbed, creepy child saying things like that, there’s another chance to be ready for the bastards who want me dead. I’ve reached a base just under the helipad now I believe, and found a canister of Ambrosia.
When I had the Special Preview Edition *cough* I made it about to the area where the small bots were just before this canister of Ambrosia before I decided to take a break, and didn’t end up completing the area. So, I’m now wandering into completely new territory now. Can’t wait, time to kill some more, I finally have both the shotgun and the assault rifle, heads are going to roll. :cheeky: And if I had the GEP gun, chunkies would be about to roll. :ebil:
Phew! Okay, that was a 30 minute break from Deus Ex. I think after finding more food like substances to keep nearby, it'll be time for me to return to my game. :ebil:

Try as I might I just cannot figure out what weapon you're talking about. The weapons you could possibly have found at the water treatment facility are assault rifles (which do possess a built-in grenade launcher for which you shouldn't have any ammo at that time, but only as an optional mode of fire), some hand-held grenades of different sorts (which you either have or don't have, so no ammo issue here) and a LAW (ditto) - but nothing one could possibly replace a GEP gun with - not to mention AFAIR there is no weapon in the whole game other than the LAW which has "tank" in the name :weird:
TheNightTerror on 25/10/2004 at 00:19
The LAW, that's the one I found, it really must've been too long since my last caffeine intake. I didn't even realize I was ditching the GEP gun for something I didn't even have ammo for, I saw 'tank' in the name and assumed it would be better than the GEP gun. It used up fewer inventory slots, had a fancier sounding name, so I tossed the GEP gun and didn't realize until much too late how badly I screwed myself.
I take it I've confused others even more than I confused myself, hopefully that clears things up. :erm: I'm not sure, though.
*searches for caffeine*
Edit: Okay, now I know why you were confused about me not being able to use the LAW. I tried to load it, nothing happened, I saw no ammo loaded, assumed it was useless. I found it again, then wondered . . .
Does it need ammo?
So I aimed at my foot and fired.

Sorry to break it to you honey  , but it's a one-shot wonder :( . Boom and thank you, next weapon. Never picked it up myself, I like the flamethrower. Just watch them burn :ebil: (well, burn, runs screaming and then keel over).
