If you can get the game to start (and then crash) without imagecfg, then you probably have the required dlls. Perhaps imagecfg is causing that problem.
I don't know what you mean by getting the error too quickly. You should be able to set everything correctly before starting a new game. Forgive me if you already know this: Set the compatibility mode on the exe through the properties dialog (right click) before you launch the game. Fire up the task manager and minimize it. Launch the game. While it's sitting at the main menu, before starting a new game Alt-tab over to the task manager and set affinity to CPU 0 only. Then switch back to the game and try starting a new game.
If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas. You mentioned that it worked fine before on this same system. What changed? Did you upgrade anything or uninstall/reinstall the game between then and now?

What I mean is I dont have enough time to start the game ctrl-alt-delete out to set affinty before I get the error then the game wont open up again and I never get to the main menu,I never get past the initial loading screen.I only stopped working after I updated my videocard drivers.

First try installing the (

Isn't the answer obvious then? Reinstall the older GPU driver.
Do a proper uninstallation from add/remove program in the control panel. Then boot into Windows safe mode and a run a driver cleaner.

Proper driver uninstallation and installation instructions:-
1. Download the newest driver from (
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx) amd.com.
1b. Download and install a driver cleaner, like (
http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=driversweeper) Driver Sweeper.
2. Uninstall your current driver from Control Panel->Programs and Features (
Programs and Features in Vista)->GPU driver.
2. Boot into safe mode and run the driver cleaner (the appropriate option is ATI Display). Check the cleaner's log viewer to make sure that it did the job.
3. Reboot in safe mode again. Install the "new" driver.
4. Boot into normal Windows. Try running the games.

I have noticed masteroinc the creators of the thief collection also have deus ex complete. If I can find that ebay maybe that would work because theif 3 works fine with no problems, and thats the same engine probably meaning same problems.I have to check ebay because I am in the US and masteronic is british lucky brits get their old games repackedged. Where we have to pay up to 100 or more for a rare game you can get for a matter of pounds over there but I guess it balances it self out with release dates.
