Current verdict: Bioshock
Nope, wrong here also. Irrational made Bioshock. Different team, different goals and ideals.

Is dxgen new thiefgen or something?

he read that wrong imo (or he just started replying without reading it proper). and I agree with your bioshock-verdict sofar. I'm sure gameplay videos will feature lots of blood, guts, screaming and leaping onto soldier's heads with snarky commentary by Adam. Bioshock has become synonymous with "take old respected IP and turn it into 2010 fragfest for consoles" so I guess, yeah, that could be happening very likely. The slick actionfest, b-movie dialogue grade trailer speaks volumes of how they want their game to be received and certainly played as well.
you'll never find the ones you never stop looking for
this is my new "spiritual successor" deduction from the awesome truckerdude and supermodel-security officer :) dialogue. I hope there will be more spurts of wisdom in following trailers, :joke:

I like the "current verdict: Bioshock" award, too: just on point. I fear that's what we may be getting, a highly polished and apparently impeccable crust with a tasteless filling using the previous games' mechanics as badly blended spices.
Let's not forget however, that we were promised a game where you don't have to kill anyone to see the end. I wonder how much of this went into game design rather than incorporating exploits (i.e. optic cloaking). This is probably the heart of the matter, since a design centered on non-lethality implies more dialogue options, more entry/escape routes, alternative story choices and no kill objectives. Maybe we could get an answer on this? René?

I would imagine Rene drops in here only to pass on the news. Which is actually a very reasonable thing to do.

"Sure, you have to cripple absolutely everyone (in horrific ways), but you are free to leave them alive.."
Might end up being the difference between "non-lethal: K/O everyone" and "non-lethal: ghosting".
The former is after all far easier to pull off. The latter can happily co-exist with the former, but is more technically challenging to design into a game (but nevertheless desirable).

What is the game actually meant to be about? I get that Adam is rather upset with his prosthetics, and people are rioting over human augmentation, but where's the pretext for the plot?
mothra on 14/6/2010 at 15:21
adam gets almost killed during attack on corp he works for - gets prosthetic limbs - asks questions.
"it is also a time of chaos and conspiracy.....corporations have more power than the goverment....these ppl Adam they're like ghosts, always in the shadows hiding behind lies and proxy soldiers...I need you to find them....YOU'LL NEVER FIND THEM !!!!...I'LL NEVER STOP LOOKING"
something like this. the writing doesn't help really but that's what I could make out inbetween slow-mo deathcams, schwarzenegger robo dude and wall-punching.

I wouldn't necessarily call the dialogue we heard so far on the trailer to be awful. At least it is not bad or annoying sounding as Unreal 2: The Awakening's dialogue (forgive me if I offended any Unreal 2 fans around here). The gung-ho Texan body-builder mech may sound stupid, but Gunther Hermann wasn't any smarter either, except he does have better lines: "You are a little prowling mouse. And dumb as a mouse. Keep on coming."
I have to agree the look is rather overkill on the technologically advanced cyberpunk look, and probably less grounded than than the first Deus Ex. I appreciate the odes to Neuromancer and other cyberpunk literature (why can't we do William Gibson or Alfred Bester based mods for SS1/SS2 or Deus Ex?) . I feel that Deus Ex: Human Revolutions resembles more the Metal Gear Solid series than the previous two.
I recall that Warren Spector listed Metal Gear Solid as one of his influences for Deus Ex, and while I wish that Deus Ex included more engaging, shocking, surprising, and original twists in the spirit of MGS, I give him credit for being less convoluted in his conspiracies that the creators of Metal Gear series. (Less complicated stories lead to more complex gameplay choices)
He also lists The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past as another important influence, because Link got to revisit the same locations over again, and other incredible design aspects. After Link completed something important, he would return to his village, and be able to take on any other threat he would not have handled before. You felt like a hero in that game. Maybe the Eidos Montreal developers should consider A Link to the Past as a design model as Warren Spector did, along with some Metal Gear Solid aspects too.
I agree they should write more inspired, intelligent, and thoughtful monosyllabic dialogue, rather than dialogue which emphasizes stupid American angst.
