Just take 10 seconds to do a little typing and avoid the impression that you're presenting your own work.

I remember seeing those above photos on DeusEx Machina. I downloaded all the pics to my DX Real Location folder. So now you see why I was so pleased to add the HK pics to my collection. Thanks Desmidus for the HK pics, Random for the Witchboy photo diary, and of course Grundbegriff for his NYC pics. Desmidus if you post any more of your HK pics online I hope you will let me see them, as I love collecting pics of cities. And Grundbegriff, do you have a website with more NYC pics I can see? Thanks you guys.

The Manulife building does resemble the Versalife building, with the semi-circles along the side of the building.
Also, it's kind of creepy, considering that the WTC towers in the North Dock pictures aren't there.
edit Desmidus: Is the Tokyo airport? The one built on the water, with the terminal being a big torus with the edge poking out above the ground?
Desmidus on 12/4/2002 at 02:04
Nope, that's not the Tokyo airport...it's Hong Kong International (Chek Lap Kok). And ICEBreaker, the rest of my HK pics are at (

Frozenman, you are thinking of the Kansai International Airport at Osaka, Japan which is entirely built on reclaimed land. The Hong Kong International Chek Lap Kok Airport is also built on reclaimed land, but since it is 3 times larger, it has to be physically attached to an island. So they are both very similar.
Desmidus, thanks a lot for the link!! Very kind!!
Haing now looked at the gallery, I have to say that it is a shame DX only looked at the Wan Chai area which seems rather old. Central looks very very impressive. This is similar to the way they addressed NYC. Instead of looking at Manhattan, they looked at Hell's Kitchen. Same with Paris. They skipped the Financial area and only looked at things like the Catacombs. WHY? I love skyscrapers, I wish DX looked at those more.
So Desmidus which is your favourite area in HK? And what about favourite building? I would have to say Bank of China, in Central. 7th tallest building in the world. It is hard to collect pics of skyscrapers sometimes.
Is that building under construction the International Finance Centre Phase 2? That is suppose to be the 4th tallest. I can't work out which is The Centre, and Central Plaza. They are the 6th and 8th tallest building respectively. For some reason it is really difficult to find pics of skyscrapers in Hong Kong and China.
Do you know if the Kowloon MTR tower is being built yet or not? It will be HK's tallest building when completed, but I don't know if that means it will be the world's tallest or not, but it does ensure that at the very least it will replace the HK IFC as the world's 4th tallest.
While on this topic, I have to say that the world's tallest building is the Sears Tower. I don't care what the records books says. Explanation given if questioned. Sears Tower rules!!! I have to say that the most inspirational building of all time is the Empire State Building. Hats off to that...

Yes, the building under construction is 2 International Finance Center. That whole area, the Central waterfront, is my favorite. In close proximity you have the HSBC bank, which is my favorite building in HK (and the most expensive in the world, until very recently), the IFC, the Mandarin Oriental hotel, and a lot more.
If you look at the collage of HK as viewed from across the bay, The Center is the building with all the colored lights on it, in Central. Central Plaza is the one on the left, more in the Wan Chai area.
I don't think the MTR tower is being built yet, but now that the old airport is closed down, a lot of tall buildings are sprouting up on the Kowloon side (there were height restrictions because of the airport).
Have you heard of the Millenium Tower? It would be the tallest building in the world if completed. It was originally planned for Tokyo, but now HK is the likely candidate.

I think the entire waterfront is reclaimed land as well. Which is amazing that it can support a whole city. The HSBC is designed by Norman Foster one of the greatest architeches of our time. He also designed the airport. I love his work. I also like IM Pei a lot. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank was completed in the late eighties at a cost of around US$700m. Which building recently became more expensive? Is inflation taken into account? I guess so, or else it must have been REALLY expensive to have held on to that position for 10-15 years.
How did you take the last photo? The panoramic view was amazing. Your technique was really good. Did you take several small ones and pasted them together? And was that just a section of the skyline with much more on either side? HK is suppose to have the longest skyline out of all cities.

Actually that is a bit disappointing. I am an advocate of squeezing as much skyscrapers as possible. It would be a shame if they stopped building in Central and instead built on the other side of the harbour in Kowloon. This happened in Sydney where you have buildings on both sides of the harbour at Circular Quay and the North Shore.
Have you heard of the Millenium Tower? It would be the tallest building in the world if completed. It was originally planned for Tokyo, but now HK is the likely candidate.
Yeah, it will be twice as tall as the world's tallest at the moment. Recent plans seems to be making leaps again. While the world's top 10 buildings are similar in height, there has been plans to build skyscrapers 50% to 100% taller than the current ones. I don't know if HK will really build the Millenium Tower or not. There has even been dreams of the Bionic Tower which will be 1km tall and 2.5 times taller than Sears Tower. However if it is built in HK it will not be inside the city because it is too large. So that seems rather a shame and a waste of money. If it can't be inside the city, it won't look that nice alone. It will be built (if ever) in HK to Shanghai.
