The Shining is commonly known as the most faithful transposition of book to film. Yet most people who read the book disliked the film, or rather the small things that were changed.
Actually, I've heard that the made for tv version with the guy from "Wings" is supposed to be more faithful to the book. Would you really expect Kubrick not to add his own touch? Anthony Burgess seemed to really dislike Kubrick's film version of his "Clockwork Orange".

I cant really say anything bad about Kubrick, he's one of my favourite directors. 2001 is one of the most eye opening films I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing.
Though Eyes Wide shut was a bit naff.

This comment confuses me (admittedly, not hard to do), because I thought most fans of the book loved it. At least, that's the impression I keep getting.

I used to post on the Tolkien newsgroups & the films caused a lot of arguments & bad-feeling between the 'book-wraiths' and the 'film-goblins' or whatever they're calling each other now- last time I was there they were arguing over which of those terms were the most insulting. I'd say, just from on-line experience, that fans of the book seem to be split fairly evenly between liking & detesting the films.
Personally, although my natural inclination is to be a bit of a 'book-wraith', for the most part I do like the films.

Res Ev 2. Milla Jovovich fighting nemisis barefist? Why would someone choose to remember such a thing? I heard she didn't really want to do that movie but because she was under contract...
I haven't seen Resident Evil 2 yet (tangent: I did just pick up the N64 version, however), but... yeah, fighting Nemesis with your fists is probably a Bad Idea. Especially when a mere Tyrant can literally knock you around like you were a pinata.
ilweran: Interesting. Thanks.

Y'know what could be cool? A trilogy.
One could be Deus Ex: The Insurrection - which chronicles JCs initial fight against the NSF - leaving them mortally damaged but hinting at worse to come ...
Then Deus Ex: Darkness Falls - shows JC and Paul leaving UNATCO and waging war against MJ12
Deus Ex: The Final Showdown - self explanitory.
Ajare on 21/2/2005 at 18:53
Deus Ex wouldn't be hard to make into a film. That doesn't mean it should be done, though. It's already heavily derivative of other films, and the plot is pretty silly. The game gets away with it because the actual plot is secondary to the way the it's presented; strip away the interaction/immersion and you've not got anything special. I can see why people would go for the conspiracy-theory angle - after all, The Da Vinci Code is peculiarly popular at the moment - but it just doesn't have enough personality. People would peg it as a Matrix/GitS/Bond rip-off a minute in.
TheGreatGodPan on 21/2/2005 at 22:28
What's Gits? And it's not all that Matrix like, just the outfits. If they add in bullet-time just because they think that it's cool I'd be ticked off. As for Bond, the Bond movies have always been more about Bond and the villain than Q's gadgets. Keep JC as mundane as he is and no one will make the connection.

GitS is (
http://www.manga.com/ghost/ghost.html) Ghost in the Shell. They nicked the whole idea of merging with an AI from it. Plus the thermoptic camoflage, and most likely the idea of augmented humans (although it's hardly a unique concept) from there too. Deus Ex is very Bond-like in parts, especially Hong Kong. You've got your super-villain intent on taking over the world who's holed up in some supposedly impregnable fortress, a steady stream of throwaway characters and so on. It's not really about the gadgets. Oh, and we all know where the MiBs are from. As for keeping JC mundane, the whole point is that outside of these movie references, JC doesn't really have much of a personality.

You all are just a bunch of gits.
Tortus on 22/2/2005 at 05:36
A tough guy in the future who wears a dark trenchcoat and sunglasses and has superhuman abilities. That's close enough. Especially as a triolgy, it would be compared to The Matrix nonstop.
I doubt ISA got thermoptic camo from GitS. Apart from it being in Predator, the idea of a suit that makes its wearer invisible isn't exactly hard to think of.
