Well, the last time I saw it, it was cancelled. Now it seems to be going again, so who knows. I'm in 2 minds about the film. If it's good, then fine but if it's crap then obviously it's just raping the game to make some money. Only time will tell.

Yeah it says on that page "Production Cancelled". Thank god. Of course it would have sucked. That'd be a hardcore raping if they adapted a game that already has a perfectly good story into a shat out Hollywood production. When Paul WS Anderson is our top game->movie director, you know we're fucked.
If they adapt it into any other form, it should be a book.

Taking on Deus Ex as a film is an extremely risky endeavour. This is mainly because one of the main things that has made Deus Ex a landmark in PC Gaming ingenuity is the amount of choices that the player can make to affect the path the game takes the player on. This obviously can't be done with a film (I know this didn't need to be mentioned - TTLG is full of samrt people!) so what a film on this game would have to achieve is for it to take the brilliant plot of this game and turn it into heavily story-driven action-thriller IMO. I film on Deus Ex can work - if done properly.

In only 2 hours or less, you could go into no depth on the subject matter. It would end up as another cheesey sci-fi (gasp), conspiracy movie with bad costume design and a done-to-death story. I don't think the lack of choice would matter, they just wouldn't be able to flesh out the ideas. Sort of like how Hideo Kojima won't make a MGS movie because there's too much story in each game, a movie would just be watered down and shallow.

Who said the movie had to be two hours or less?

Who said that it would turn out like that? I think you're just assuming that it would turn out like most hollywood shit turns out to be.

Who are 'they?' If you mean the entire film industry then your generalising disturbs me. You'll be surprised what can be done with film.

Hideo Kojima
used to make film, don't forget. The reason why he started to make games is because it was cheaper and easier to put across his visual sense of his stories. I think the
real reason why he doesn't make a film is not because he can't 'fit all of it in' but more of it's just to darn expensive. Don't forget, MGS's story is
very much like a film. In fact, if it weren't for the bits of gameplay thrown in between it could very much be a film.

All my comments were related to the length. If you could do a mini-series well, then Deus Ex would be great. I don't know how long you'd want the film to be, but I think it would need Lord of the Rings length to flesh everything out properly. I didn't mean to suggest it's because Hollywood couldn't do it - it could with the right people. My faith in movies has been renewed with Collateral, and the upcoming Sin City and Batman Begins look very promising.
Also, some of Deus Ex's best moments were long conversations with barmen and AI constructs. What they said heavily influenced my choice for the game's ending, and I don't think you can do that kind of thing in a movie. Mini-series it'd be fine though.

A mini-series would be excellent. That way you could still get all the detail in the story and discourses as well as the main plot.

That will be very good to have a film made of DX and DX:IW
User was banned by David on 1-3-2005
