Err... well, I guess you know what I mean.
Good work, btw.

I thought Ghost In The Shell was really overrated. Yeah the animation was top-notch, but the rest was a mishmash of random firefights, gratuitious robot nudity, endless shallow philosophising, and the inexplicable references to the human personality as a "ghost".
I'd rather rewatch Akira again. Or Cowboy Bebop.

Or re-read Preacher & Transmetropolitan......

im not sure anyone will know this referrnce, but look it up and it will be verifiable.
In paris there is an apartment you can waltz right on in and discover a man and a woman discussing a vacation in the woods. He calls her O. This is a direct reference to thebook "Story of O" which is a about how far one may go to prove there love for someone. It's actually quite sick because in order to show her love, she is willing to be perversely objectified sexually in every horribly imaginable way. In this cabin in the woods he takes her to, he unleashes his sickest S&M fantasies, objects, food, anything. and she being a non-veteran in this form of sex goes along to prove her love for him. Interesting to come across the referrence in Deus Ex. Also: the book has no known author, it's an anonymous book.
as far as AI merging. Read Neuromancer for god sakes, by William Gibson, it kinda gives you an idea where hot chicks in tight leather with machine guns came from - where the matrix's roots can be found.this genre of literature is called Cyberpunk.
Eberon on 30/7/2002 at 17:39
Yeah, I'm a regular fan of all of Gibson's works. Anyone could easily say that nearly any futuristic view is a nod to Gibson(sometimes called the "father" of cyberpunk)'s work. So don't go getting elitist on us ;)
Thanks for the tip on The Story of O though. I'll add that to the list to ask about if possible.

The Knights Templar Cathedral is homage to Thief, the underwater research facility is homage to System Shock 2 and Area 51 is homage to Half-Life.
Eberon on 31/7/2002 at 04:51
Yeah... that one has also been mentioned many times. You can find discussion on it in many places in the forums as well as on the page I mentioned previously in this thread.
You should really take some time to read threads before you post in them ;)

in building 14, in paris, the data cube in the locked cabinet gives you info for the security terminal (rzelazny/shadowjack)
Roger Zelazny is one of america's greatest sci-fi fantasy authors of this century, and in 1971 published his work "the jack of shadows". it is very possible that it is modeled after Carl Gustaf Jung's concept of the "shadow" the dark side of consciousness where we store our undesireable traits. (frueds disciple later turned independant). Its fiting considering the Martial law and lock down in paris. When the sun goes down and the night creeps in, the dark side has arisen.
more Roger Zelazny info here: (

also: did anyone else have a phone conversation with ICARUS in the building 14 office? i felt compelled to use the phone and ICARUS was suddenly talking to me. strange.
hope this is a good addendum to the list. (keepin my eyes peeled)
