On my latest run through the game, I got to thinking about how much of the game you can just plain skip, and what consequences it has. Like--
Has anyone ever tried just completely avoiding the hostage crisis at the 'Ton by stacking some crates and going up the fire escape to your apartment? Does "the specialist" take care of it? Are the Rentons there the next time you come back to Hell's Kitchen?
What happens if you blow off Castle Clinton and proceed directly to the subway station and the warehouse mission?
I did discover that the UNATCO/NSF firefight by the subway station is scripted to start as soon as you look at any of the troopers by the barricades, no matter how far away you are. I was playing NSF-sympathetic this time around and was hoping to be able to tranq the soldiers before any fighting broke out, but the scripting ruined that idea. So I made my way around to the maintenance shaft behind the shanty town, keeping my gaze away from the soldiers, crawled through the vents directly to the hostages and freed them. When I got back to UNATCO, I kept getting comments from the troops about how I hadn't helped them! Hello? Those hostages didn't free themselves!

Anna will be mad, Manderley will scold you and tell you that she is your immediate superior and only give you 500 bucks for the mission. I think the line is something like "you refused to aid the NYPD in a routine investigation" or something.

All I can do is defer to the master who brought us the hacker's guide to sin.
