I have not tried playing NG+ in either game. But I did play Human Revolution again from start to finish right before Mankind Divided was released. Both in GMDX difficulty. To me, the shooting was about the same through most of the game. Both games force you to be stealthy until you're aug'ed up. The main guns are basically the same, and the AI is basically the same. Enemies don't do combat tactics, once alerted they all just converge on your position. And they are unrealistically accurate. So in levels populated with a lot of enemies, if you want to play lethal you basically have to approach in cover, pick off one or two, retreat and hide until they go back to their patrols, and repeat. It's only later in the game, after you've upgraded your armor and combat augs and weapons, that run & gun becomes a fun way to play rather than a save & reload fest. And it's late in the game when I noticed the main difference, which is that Human Revolution gives you a selection of heavy weapons to play with while Mankind Divided does not. The only heavy in MD is the grenade launcher, which you can get right at the start. The appearance of new heavy weapons late in HR provides a fresh twist on combat that Mankind Divided lacks. I can't speak to NG+ mode, but in the normal game I just don't see a big improvement.
Regarding the detail and realism of the levels, I certainly agree with that.
The music wasn't great, but it wasn't distracting either. I just kept it at a low level in the background so it didn't detract from the realism.
My biggest gripes remain:
a. The story
b. The interface

Well, I don't know what to tell you. I found the shooting to be far more difficult with all augs in HR than MD, and didn't find it anywhere near as fun. It seems much easier to die quickly in HR and the range of augs for lethal combat is much smaller. I don't know what to attribute that to, but I simply can't agree that it plays the same even though the mechanics are nearly identical.

I think HR is more difficult in general early on, but that could be down to the boss fights/helicopter defense plus the way your start Manky with a fully-auged training mission and then get a pile of praxis kits as soon as you finish the first main quest. Manky really ups things with the number and type of enemies, though, or at least it felt that way even if they were still easily-evaded for the most part. HR seemed to have constant situations where you had to either directly/sneakily confront enemies or use the cloaking aug (which I never had) to get around them. The boss fights, the helicopter defense, escaping the TV station, escaping the Hensha apartments, etc. I don't remember MD really putting you in those kinds of situations until the timed double-mission at the end.

Right, so. This game is absolutely MASSIVE. I have apparently spent 32 hours tooling around and I still have a third of the main game to go.

That definitely sounds good...Shame about the story, though.
I plan to play it next week on my newest system...Should feel spacious and beautiful, if nothing else.

The side missions are pretty decent. It's got this slightly weird flip-flop between Adam Jensen, PI and Adam Jensen, international commando though.

I'm in the middle of the Desperate Measures Day 1 DLC and it's pissing me off. This was so clearly a sub-quest which they chopped out of the main game. We'll see if the System Rift DLC feels the same (my money is in on yes). Do we have to wait for a Director's Cut of this game too that will stitch the DLCs back into the main game?

Yep...as expected, unfortunately.
That's how these guys operate.
