There are some here who feel the same as you do. And there are some like myself who think that it's a good game, just not in the same league as DX. There is also one individual here who thinks IW is better than DX, and we've already had too much fun arguing with him. To the point where this topic has pretty much been beaten to death. See this thread to catch up:

Lots of people agree that it isn't as good, although as I've found with people such as the above poster (who for some reason thinks I prefer IW to DX, when I've only ever argued that it's "as good as") most of these opinions of the game are based on poor reasons that don't hold up to any form of reasoning. However, I don't think many people, if any, that will agree it's "unplayable". Most just say that it's not as good, but saying "IT'S CRAP AND UPLAYABLE" is silly.

Ha, Dave you're always good for a laugh, or for a "I want to punch my head against something sharp". One of the two.

Is there a known issue with this game and contemporary software/hardware? I recently downloaded the demo to give the game a try but once the loading screen shows up there's no progress anymore. That is, one time I tab-ed back to the desktop after a minute or so of waiting and all of a sudden I was inside the game a minute or so later. Config: AMD X2, Nvidia 8600GT (Forceware 163.71), WinXP SP2.

Feel free to do so.
Sam, I can't think of anything there that should cause a problem. I've run Thief 3 on the latest drivers, and I use the same operating system. Might be something to do with your processor (although it's not a Dual Core thing since mine works fine).

I was ordered a sandwich a few weeks ago when the shopkeeper at the register noticed that I had on my Deus Ex Invisible War shirt. (I almost never wear it, but sometimes I get behind in the laundry...) Ah, cool shirt, he proclaimed, and then explained that he had just downloaded it on GameTap a week or so ago.
"So how did you like it?" I asked him.
"It was alright ... really retro. Blank game was better." (I can't remember which game he said ... I think it was Perfect Dark but I am not sure.)
"Ah, yes," I said in reply, "... well Deus Ex 1 was better, but, I don't have a Deus Ex 1 shirt."
He thought that was very, very funny, and began to laugh hysterically. The expression my face must have been "gosh, it wasn't that funny..." as he stopped suddenly, and handed me my receipt.
Now I wish I had a Deus Ex 1 shirt.

I've learned to not talk to people I meet in public about video games.
It just makes me sad.

+1 to original poster
I don't mean to sound reactionary or irrational or anything but for me the game is unplayable too. I have a copy sitting right here in my CD waller that I have probably installed on no less than half a dozen occasions, every time I ended up uninstalling in in disgust after 5 minuets.
The thing is, I really want to play it!! I just cant bring myself to do it! I kinda even wish I played IW first, I am sure in its own regard its a perfectly good game, but the simple fact that my mind is forced to see it as the sequel to Deus Ex just breaks it for me.
Maybe I will give it one more go, if only to use the skull gun :P
But I will officially be renaming the .exe and instillation dir to "Eidos's Invisible War: a Deus Ex spin-off" to make it a little more palatable to my brain.

Beware Project Snowblind then ...
The Official Unofficial Deus Ex Spinoff that's Not Really.
