Only thing that concerns me is that despite the great lighting and models, the world detail and textures are not impressive at all. I would hope that the demo isn't using the most detailed textures available, but what I find slightly shabby is that if you look at the windows, there's no frame or anything, just a big hole in the brickwork with a glass texture in it.
My view is that the XBox is to blame. ;(
Actually, I heard that Ion Storm cut out the high resolution textures to keep the demo's file size down....much like what Epic did with UT2k3.
The average texture size is 512x512 in the demo andI think I read that the max texture size for the retail game is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1024x1024..so we probably won't have much to complain about once the actual game hits the shelves.
And I get a new graphics card..I'll quit bitching then.

Disappointed. I've played through most of the demo now and that's all I can say of the most anticipated game of the year. Graphics are junk, inventory and weapon management is awkward to say the least... Only good thing I can say about this is that it still seems to be about Deus Ex and that I seriously hope the actual game will be different. My main focus shifted rapidly from DX 2 and Thief 3 to KOTOR and STALKER-Oblivion lost. Which is something I'd laughed at yesterday:(

Graphics are junk? Are we playing the same game here? Huh...

Is there anything to do about the "Pixil Shader 1.1 capabilities" problem, other than buying a new video card?
Keeper Arnal on 22/11/2003 at 03:22
You need a new video card, basically. Or an XBox. ;)

No way around that. A Geforce 3 or equivalent is the very minimum you need to run the game.

Thank goodness I have a top-of-the-line machine (sorta). Everything is smooth with everything on on 1024x768 (and above, but it's a waste for me with a regular ole' 19" monitor.)

All I can say is, Warren Spector needs to take Harvey Smith out behind the Ion Storm woodshed (assuming there is such a thing) and beat him savagely until he swears he'll never do it again.
I mean, it's not just that the demo is bad, it's bafflingly bad. Why is all the text in a giant font? Why is the HUD so unbelievably obtrusive? Why are the controls so mushy and unresponsive? How, in the name of all things holy, did they manage to make an interface that's actually less intuitive than the one in the first game?
The ragdoll physics might be good if they weren't so cartoonishly exaggerated. I put one handgun bullet into a dead body and it reacts as though three strong men swung a maul at it.
On the plus side, it runs a lot better if you disable AA in your video drivers (as in completely disable, not "application controlled"), and the cameras and most of the environments look damn cool. But this is DX2, it should have a lot more going for it than that.

What is even stranger is that sometimes the physics were absent. You could throw a huge barrel at a guard, and the guard doesn't even flinch, like he was made of stone.

Demo won't run for me. It installs and starts up fine, but when I try to begin a game it freezes at the loading screen and I'm forced to reset my computer. On one occasion it gave me a "This application has caused an error and must be shut down .. etc etc". I have a fiend of a modem that dies every minute or so, so I'm wondering if the file was corrupted while it was being downloaded. I used Download Accelerator, and the game installs fine, but I'm wondering if there's any way of checking the integrity of the setup file, as opposed to just trying to download the whole thing a second time. Which takes hours. Is there some sort of free program anybody knows of that can determine something like that?
