Actually no. What I said (or at least meant to say) was that I'd found it cool to having been able to read the comments, and not what the comment said. At least I will be able to more easily get over the fact it seems they took Deux Ex and made it appeal to those who otherwise subscribe to Lord of the Rings games.
Besides, if the game will really be out in February in Europe, then I have plenty of time to lower my expectations enough to actually being pleasantly surprised because of some elements of the game in the end.

I think the problem a lot of people are having with the demo is that they're comparing it to Deus Ex, and expecting the same thing. IW is not Deus Ex. It just occurs in the same world. If they were going to make a game that looked, acted, and feeled exactly like Deus Ex, in every possibly way, they might as well just make an expansion pack for the original, and save a lot of work. (Which is not to say that they haven't tried to keep faithful to the original Deus Ex; I'm just saying that to make a clone game wouldn't make anyone happy)
That said, it does have problems, but so does every game. Nothing will be perfect for everyone, and each game has it's own idiosyncracies that you have to get used to. Personally, I'm hopefully optimistic of IW being almost everything it's hyped up to be.

Well, I think most of us see the idea of a sequel in that we
a) return to the universe of the original game,
b) have the game make us feel like we felt before,
c) give the things we liked about it previously,
d) expand on the ideas, take the plot further, with similar or better mechanics that made the original game good,
e) address the problems we saw earlier.
What I've seen so far, the complaints were basically about not enough b), and loss to a certain extent of c). Now, we can all look back in our memories about which sequels in the gaming universe did a good job of everything, and which ones didn't. And with a game of such a high acclaim, there is, of course, always a high base of expectations about the sequel. I think the main problem here might be the type of gamer who liked Deux Ex is probably just a part of the audience the sequel will try to appeal to. And this, naturally, causes grumblings with the fans which will likely lose features they liked.
But maybe this is another game that needs to be played awhile, basically to ripen in our minds. We haven't really seen the whole picture yet.

Yay for the die-hard optimists like Tej, where would the world be without people who, in the face of all evidence, refuse to believe that a company has made a complete and utter, irretrievable, stuff-up of the sequel to one of the most highly regarded games in gaming history.?
I don't care if IW is or is not set in the same game universe. It basically is, but that isn't so much the issue. I don't even care if it does or does not make me feel like it felt before. No, what really grates is that Ion Storm have taken DX, dumbed it down into a farce, taken out features that worked, that were done well, sacrificed the control of the game to pander to the console market, haven't even bothered to attempt to make the demo work well on a PC, created something that somehow manages to work slower than games that look significantly better than it and changed the whole dynamic from something that was a choice between stealth and combat into something that is blatantly forcing the player into combat. They have even managed to mess up havok physics, changing the balance of the simulation so that it is so exaggerated as to be positively laughable. And this is before I even get down to ranting about specifics.
The only thing they haven't done that could make it worse is include flaming cart races!
I wouldn't believe that DX and IW could actually come from the same software house.

OY! How the hell did I miss that one? Great, so the news keeps getting better and better each time I visit the forums.
Okay, well then, if the SDKs are not coming out, then I'm not buying either game (and I'm in no rush (ie., quite capable of waiting it out) because I need to upgrade yet anyway, and haven't even begun the planning process). If ISA cannot see that the GAME is 10% and the COMMUNITY is 90%, then they are stone blind foolsies.
Duh. The biggest appeal of the Unreal engines are the editability. Suggest we raise a Major Stink folks - it's the only way.
Crion on 23/11/2003 at 15:39
Well, in their defense, didn't the SDK for the original Deus Ex come out with a whimper? Is there any mods for it?

In the face of what evidence? That people absolutely hate change, and throwing them into DX:IW head first predictably caused them to be completely alienated?
After starting a game for the first time, I set the opacity to a nice, low value, then figured out how to work the inventory (and interface at large) efficiently. I knew about most of the OMG THEIR DUMPING DOWN changes, and either liked or didn't mind them. My conclusion: It's a Deus Ex game. Should be better than the first if some issues are fixed, and the things we can't judge from just the demo are good.

Again, we will see when it comes out.
I've learnt from the Alone in the Dark series that gaming industry is a lot about the money and much less about enthusiasm and fans' appeal. So I'm not sure how long it'll take until we are actually greatful for having a game released on a PC (along with the other consoles). We might like the game in the end, but so far what the community shows is displeasure with losing things we liked previously.

Meh, the only disappointment so far is that hacking is just as simplistic as it was in DE1 [I liked hacking in SS2 and SS1 damnit!]; the fact they dropped the overcomplex mess that was DE1's interface is something to cheer for.
