Sorry but, Deus Ex 1 ruled... and it was nice and long.
Any attempt to justify shortening the sequel is just BS.
Fans or devs or whoever can say anything they want and try to test my memory by bashing the first game's levels and length, but I know what I played and there was NOTHING wrong with it. And it was great in large part because it was a nice length.
I won't be placated, I won't be fooled... the XBox strikes once again. Most likely.
I love how all these people are all of a sudden coming out and saying "oh yea, DX was waaay too long and most of the levels sucked" that is totally a retroative position come to specifically to bring your mind in line with the devs and their decisions which are based on stupid motivations, like the XBox.
If all these people thought quality levels were something you had to suffer through tons of lame shit in DX1 to get to... why are they even here? why are they even fans? what am I missing here?

No one has said anything about "tons of lame shit". Some people are simply expressing the opinion that DX could have gotten away with less levels. The reason these opinions are "coming out" now is this discussion is rather pertinent to those sorts of opinions. This is not some sinister scheme to rewrite history so please stop jerking your knee.

Pipe Smoke, it is only your opinion that all the levels in DX were great. It does not mean it is a fact which we all must share. I for one saw great discrepancies between levels in DX. Did you find the Paris Catacomb level to be as interesting as the Paris Metro level? Maybe you did, but I for one did not, and I would appreciate it if you didn't tell me what I like and did not like. There were 72 maps in Deus Ex. I don't mind if it is reduced to 40 maps if every one of those maps were as good as Hong Kong Market. You might have liked the Mole People's tunnel, but it doesn't mean everyone else did.

Uhm, I haven't seen anyone say that. However I _have_ seen people say that as you approach the end of the game the levels become more lacking in design and feel dragged out. And many people have been saying this ever since the game out, it is probably the single biggest complaint from fans of the game. Come on, compare the design of Area 51 to some of the earlier levels. I love the game, but that level was pretty horrible in comparison.

I really don't see much similarity there. Perhaps it's a matter of playing style. Certainly your equipment and your opponents capabilities are much different.

And while I have no objection to labs, one could point out that the MJ12 at UNATCO was similar to MJ12's Helibase in HK which was similar to Vandenberg and that again was similar to the Oceanlab's above ground labs. The Oceanlab itself was similar to the Missile Silo which was similar to Area 51.
IMHO the similarity is superficial. Like great music - variations on a theme. BTW, VBerg is one of my favorite levels - inside, outside - many ways to play it.

I liked interacting with NPCs like at Hell's Kitech, HK and Paris. After leaving the La Porte De L'Enfer which was only 70% of the way through the game, you no longer engage conversations with civilians.
Fair enough. But given the circumstances I never noticed the omission.

I am not really complaining about DX1 at all. I don't expect every level to be as exciting as Tonnochi Road, but if DX2 can improve on the flaws of DX1 and do make every level like Paris Metro, then it would make a better game.
You mention two levels I consider sub-standard for Deus Ex.

If people like things like the Catacombs, the Cathedral and Area 51, then they can get the same thing from Quake.

Nonsense.

What was unique about Deus Ex were places like Hell's Kitchen or the HK Canals. So yes I would sacrifice quantity for quality.

Fewer but "better" levels would be fine with me too - provided that "better" means
more to explore in each level. I have no problem with a game that _can_ be completed quicker, so long as it offers as many hours of interesting gameplay. And, there's IMHO nothing at all wrong with a few mini-levels like the gas station.
