"We probably put too many missions into Deus Ex," he said. "People these days don't have 40 hours that they are willing to spend on a game. So we are going to have fewer locations. We will still have places like Cairo, Seattle and Antarctica, but with a greater level of detail."
I think thats a dissapointing way of looking at things really. I certainly didn't feel as though Deus Ex was too long.

Well with a greater level of detail, it means you can do more exploring at each location if you want, or just do the main objective and move on.
I felt DX1 was repetitive at some points and some maps should have been scraped.

what you're talking about here. Which maps should have been scraped? The only
one I don't look forward to is Dowd's mausoleum.

Good things never last long enough.

towards the end it got somewhat repetitive, I mean it was military base after military base after military base for the last 3 areas.
however, unless they offer TONS more control over plot progression, I think that shortening the game is cheap.

one I don't look forward to is Dowd's mausoleum. Quite a few maps were rather unimaginative in my view. The journey from to the Airfield via the Mole People comes to mind. This was repeated again at the Catacombs. And while I have no objection to labs, one could point out that the MJ12 at UNATCO was similar to MJ12's Helibase in HK which was similar to Vandenberg and that again was similar to the Oceanlab's above ground labs. The Oceanlab itself was similar to the Missile Silo which was similar to Area 51. I liked interacting with NPCs like at Hell's Kitech, HK and Paris. After leaving the La Porte De L'Enfer which was only 70% of the way through the game, you no longer engage conversations with civilians. I am not really complaining about DX1 at all. I don't expect every level to be as exciting as Tonnochi Road, but if DX2 can improve on the flaws of DX1 and do make every level like Paris Metro, then it would make a better game. If people like things like the Catacombs, the Cathedral and Area 51, then they can get the same thing from Quake. What was unique about Deus Ex were places like Hell's Kitchen or the HK Canals. So yes I would sacrifice quantity for quality.

I think Icebreaker is right. Less missions but more detail my be a good thing. For some users who want to conquer quickly they have the option. For those more adventurous you can figure out all the hidden details. DX1 kind of hit on this alittle by allowing a few different ways to do things, such as Hells Kitchen. There were many ways to access the hidden base, now if they take this idea and expand it, andd more interesting NPCs (I believe Warren metioned they were adding many characters at one point) you can have a game that takes 20 - 200 hours to complete depending on style. Then add in the stealh factor (ala Thief) and you have much more replay value...... If they do it right they can make this work with less missions.

The problem is Icebreaker, Quake blows. Deus Ex is fun to play, Quake is not. The length of time it takes to get through an RPG is the most important factor to me (longer play times being better). It is only new once. I have nothing against areas that look similar as long as they are not exactly the same. It is predictability that I wish to avoid and as long as I do not know exactly what will be behind the next corner, I am happy.
As for the lame excuse that people don't have 40 hours that they are willing to spend on a game, that is a joke. If someone didn't have 40 hours to play a game, they wouldn't buy the game. Video games are time killers, not something to occupy you for three evenings and then be thrown away. Better to buy half as many games then to have all games be half as long. Especially when so few games are worth playing anyway (first person RPG's are all too rare).

I reckon while it will have less levels, overall content will actually increase. So you can get your 40+ hours while playing through normally... while the run and gun people will get their 15-20.

I wish DX was longer. I mean at the end you FINALLY have all your new toys and skills. Getting master Rifles and Pistols, WOW. That was fun. Throw in lv4 targetting and you are talking some major damage, and fun. You didn't WANT to be stealty at the end. It was just too much fun to use your skills to drop people from across the level. The sniper rifle was the best weapon BAR NONE. I'd even take out bots (the little ones). Just because i could. The big ones were another story. But i wish it oculd have been longer, and then if they would have given the option NOT to defect. I would STILL be playing it now. But regardless if DX2 is just one level I'll buy it anyway. Because if it is ANYTHING like DX its okay in my book. I'll have to get a new computer first. but oh well,.
