Has anyone else here read Liz William's novels? I've just finished the third one and thought I'd recommend them to anyone who likes something a bit odd.
They're set in a near future city called Singapore Three, settled primarily by Chinese. Heaven and Hell are accessible, with proper permits; and entities move between them regularly both with and without those permits, leading to some interesting political consequences. The local religions are Chinese based; but it's clearly indicated that other areas will have their own supernatural flavors depending upon their religions. Ghosts, demons, celestials, and nano and bio technology abound.
I like the character of DI Chen, he's a nice person. The world is intriguingly open-edged and the plots are interesting.
Now that I've finished the DI Chens currently available, I'm starting The Hidden City, Michelle West's new novel about Jewel ATerafin. I like her work too, and am looking forward to it.
