I am currently stationed in GTMO, Cuba and considering whether to buy the game or not. AS I have to order evrything online, returning a game is very impractical.
I am currently playing wizardry 8/ might and magic 9 series that feature phased/turned based combat options. I like to be able to pause during the battle and regroup. Is this possible with Arx Fatalis? Or is it similar to Diablo where I got finger cramps from clicking my mouse. LOL.
One of my online friends discribed the combat system similar to Morrowind- but since I do not own that game yet- I was confused. So if possible, a detailed description on how one starts, continues, and finshes a battle- to include use of hot keys, etc. Thanks for any help you can give me.

It's really not like either of the games you described. It's more like the old game Ultima Underworld (in fact it's practically the exact same thing as that game). You hold down on the left mouse button to ready a swing or pull your bow, and a gem on the bottom of your screen will light up. Depending on how long you hold the button the gem will glow brighter, the brighter the gem the more damage your attack will do. Also, when using a melee weapon, there are 4 types of swings. If you just press attack you will do an overhead swing, if you press left or right before you attack you will do a slash in that dierection, and if you press back you will do a low thrust. Enemis can do the same types of attacks, and you will see them readying their swings as well. If you learn to watch what type of swing they are going to do next, you can even try to dodge their attacks by moving out of the way.
Hope this gives you some idea of what to expect. You should try to download the demo to get a better idea.

no you cannot pause during battle, it is not like turn based. indeed, it gets very fast during battle, and you have to think fast and act fast during a hard battle. you cannot pause at all except to go to the save/quit menu. but you cannot interact with the world while in pause. However, you can quick save alot and reload if you lose the battle.
combat is more like FPS than RPG. You walk arouns and explore. If a guard sees you he attacks, but you can be careful and sometimes sneak past them. You can control when a battle starts by being careful and watching out for enemies. basically you can attack with your primary weapon as much as you want. you can move and run around, so you have tactics... you can lure the guards away one at a time or sneak up behing and get the first hit. Actually it is alot like the swordplay in the Thief games but you have more power.
then you can also use spells. you can pre-cast 3 spells to quickslots, which are easy to trigger since you just press the "1/2/3" button. you could also cast the spell during combat but i never do this. the spell requires you do do memorized mouse movements, and is hard to do in the heat of battle. so its only useful if you pre-cast it to a quickslot.
the other option is that you have potions, so you can press "h" and other buttons to quickly take a health potion and help you.
