I think the argument they were making is that both the "I shot at the car tyres" and "stupid law permitting deadly force" were in the defence and that there is no way for anyone to know that he was acquitted based on the latter and the former is more likely. The latter argument was only pursued because it needed to be for an exhaustive defence.
What I think doesn't really matter, but I'd agree that with those two arguments on the defence, it's more likely the acquittal was based on the least insane one - we all now how the media loves to sex up a story - after all, which version gets more clicks?

Firing at the tires of a moving vehicle IS lethal force. That's not the "least insane" reason. And if he's not brought up on manslaughter or at least reckless endangerment, then what they're saying is that yes, he was justified.

Don't get me wrong, I'm appalled by the fact that the guy even had a gun to shoot at a person, let alone that he did it. I just think that the media's alacrity in reporting that the guy was acquitted because of that one law might be a little over-done.

They're in Texas. The perp was white. The victim was a brown woman of ill repute. What are the odds of getting 12 random-ish Texan jurors to convict him, no matter how the defense excused it? :p

I don't know. How much of the Texan stereotype is 100% true and a part of daily life?

All of it. I get that you're European and can't wrap your brain around how cartoonish people can be over here but the stereotype is prevalent for a reason.

For the record all of my friends that live in that neighborhood were appalled & disowned responsibility.

It's not so much that I can't wrap my head around it, I just don't
know and didn't want to assume.

A European not making huge assumptions about the U.S.? Well I never. ;)

I used to, but then it occurred to me that I've never met an American I didn't like. That said, I only meet the ones which leave the country.
