Not sure if this'll work on TTLG, especially as a combined thread. It may well fail for a number of reasons, but I wanted to try it anyway.
The idea is to have a thread where people can post about the little but fundamental problems they've been having with games. Not technical ones so much as just basic questions about how to get better at game X. Questions along the lines of: Is there something I'm missing about combat in this game? Is flying meant to be this difficult in that game? Are there any worthwhile beginners guides or videos for the game I'm currently playing?
So, to get things started: one of the games I'm currently playing is Risk of Rain, one of the great TTLG Christmas gifts I got. However, I'm not very good at it. I can (usually) manage the first stage, but as soon as I get to the second one, I'm toast. Even getting as many power-ups as possible in the first stage doesn't make my character and his attacks strong enough to have much of a chance. What are the general tips on how to survive past stage 1?

Good idea for a thread.
I have a question about Dead Space 2, which I just started. What are the best weapons, and how many weapons should I keep on my person? Too many weapons might mean the ammo I find is for all weapons, including the one I only use as a last resort backup weapon. So two, three weapons at most? And which ones would you recommend?

I haven't played Risk of Rain for a long time, but one thing I can say is that the drones are what got me through it (for one loop at any rate) coupled with the unlockable character that has the stance that blocks all attacks from the front. The amount of enemies in the last stage is so insane that I can't imagine doing it in any way other than crouching in a corner with shields up while my drones clean house. They get really powerful once you amass enough of them. But mostly it's just about getting lucky with the items and playing enough of it that dealing with most enemies becomes routine.

risk is all about time management. you dont clear stages, you gab some key items and move on. you have to strategically decide which chests to open, and how long to wait to trigger the boss. (hint: absolutely not longer then 2 minutes on stage 1)
last time i played i was able to clear the game with any character on normal, and with most on hard. (starting difficulty) even did a monsoon run or two.

Just keep playing - RoR is one of my all time favourite indie games. As you get more and more unlocks and get the risk:reward ratio figured, you'll get through it.
Play on easy to begin with as you can still trigger unlocks.
Easiest character to play IMO is the engineer. The seeker missiles mean you can run round the map with the button held down and kill anything within a certain range. Also, the power up with fireworks released whenever you open chests or activate statues is great.
