Ever since BSG finished I've been searching for a replacement. Any recommendations? (Aside from Doctor Who) Or is all of the stuff currently coming out of anywhere except BBC Wales a waste of time?
I saw the feature-length pilot of Caprica several months ago and all the nonsense about mono-theology extremists, Anarchist VR night clubs and ERIC STOLTZ were an instant turn off. Trixie from Deadwood seemed to be the only redeeming factor, but her character was pretty much a non-entity.
Flash Forward is complete garbage; V 2009 is utterly uninteresting; Fringe feels like a poor man's version of the X-Files that's written by people completely lacking souls. Stargate sucks by default, so I'm not even going to entertain the possibility of giving the new series featuring Robert Carlyle and Lou Diamond Phillips a chance.
I don't have the money to buy DVD sets, so that's out.
I have been watching X-Files reruns on Sky, most of which is completely new to me. I'm surprised by how good it is, the self-contained episodic shows run a gambit of genres and tones. The awful, convoluted Mythology episodes are a big turn-off though, but they seem to only come every dozen episodes at this point.
During the original run I only saw the last three seasons and by the final year it was 90% Mythology rubbish and it had completely disappeared up its own arse at that point. No, the conspiracy is not about alien colonisation/hybridisation but an attempt at creating super soldiers, no wait it's about alien colonisation again, now it's back to super soldiers... ugh.

Warehouse 13 is supposed to be reasonably decent, but I haven't seen it yet myself.

Firefly is really good, it's very lighthearted in comparison to BSG but imho way more fun.

While not really Sci fi, if you're watching X files i'd strongly recommend Millennium. Also done by Chris Carter, he actually oversaw the entire first season himself (taking a break from X files that season, handing it off to his staff) Lance Henricksen has been in some pretty awful stuff lately, screamers 2 etc... , but this was filmed while he was in his prime imo.

In spite of my initial reservations, I thought Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles turned out to be a solid show. Shame that they cut it short when it became interesting... And that they un-canon-ed it in favor of the horrible, horrible turd that is Terminator 4. :eww:
re: Fringe, while I agree it's not groundbreaking by any means, it's ok, the X-Files-lite vibe makes it pretty cool.

Farscape? Its been years and years since I saw it, but I loved it when it was on. The latter seasons got a little convoluted, but the earlier ones (my favorites) were kind of like x-files, self contained little stories in each episode that don't carry that much from episode to episode. Give it a try.

Firefly
Seen both. Ditto for Babylon 5 and any Trek series which wasn't excrement.
Thanks, I had completely forgotten about Millennium. I'll look for some deals on the TV DVD sets.
I should also mention that I've seen most of the recent Joss Whedon show starring Eliza Dushku, that was rubbish. (I've forgotten what it's called, nor do I really care.) I wouldn't be surprised if Fox had cancelled it for good at this point.

Farscape?
I saw that years ago in bits. Struck me as Australian Gilligan's Island in Space with muppets.
Did Lexx: The Series maintain the tongue in cheek, intentional badness throughout its entire run? The miniseries and first season were a lot of fun.
EDIT:-
Ohhhh, any decent Twilight Zone-esque anthology shows that are worth watching?

Dollhouse, and they did.

Millennium is one of my favourite shows but the third season wasn't that good except for maybe one or two episodes. Not sure if you can really class it as sci-fi though.
Watching Dark Angel and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex at the moment, both very good in my opinion.

Stargate sucks by default
This should be true but its not. The other Stargates are, imho, the worst trash sci-fi out there, but Universe is actually (so far) not bad.
And if you really want to know about sci-fi shows you should be visiting io9.
