That's a contested point, and you'll find a lot of disagreement between the two.
Personally, I prefer dark themes, but in general I find something with slightly less contrast than black-on-white or white-on-black easier on my eyes.
I'd also say that I'm often reading the forum between playing dark games, and the sudden change of contrast from darker game to searingly bright forum can be unpleasant.
