The idea here is a system where you select your own news, etc. That part is what Daveh described on IRC.
The way I made it, you could close/minimise/resize those article boxes in the main content. The grippy-buttons work as "more"-link, without page reloading. Basically pull big, what interests you. When one of these actions frees up space in the main content area, previous news items will push up, into view.
The columns on the side are still to be worked over. Like a lot of other things. To be added: Popular threads, links area, forum preview area, customisable RSS feeds, live search.
The selector would be opt-in and centralised. So unlike it says now, selecting "Thief2", would populate not just the News area, but also the forum preview, RSS feeds, Popular threads, etc.

Oh well, changing colours is easily done. It's a draft anyway, the question is more about the concept. A more traditional way would be to allow you choosing your areas of interest but present articles as lists of headlines, possibly with a teaser, that you click to get to the actual article page.
EDIT: I hope someone else steps up with a design soon, so we can compare, choose the best parts, etc.

I've never really understood the theme colors of the forums and frontpage being what they are - Games like Thief, System Shock, Bio Shock, Fallout, Oblivion, Underword and Deus Ex don't shout "white, lavender and gray" to me really. Not to mention how much better screenshots and such look on darker backgrounds. I understand the Looking Glass connection - but I love the color scheme on Thief-thecircle.com and think something like that might be better adapted forum-wide. Most of the games discussed here are not bright and cheery.
Just a thought.

While there will be a dark forum colour scheme, which someone chose for their forum incentive, the main forum colour scheme will not be changing to a dark one as it isn't 1998 and we're not a geocities emo site. It's appropriate for some of the daughter sites, but not the forums.

I'll offer to make a dark theme for the forums if you send me the files I need to modify (a .css?) and the image sources. I'd keep the current layout and just change the colours.
I'd just modify the linked .css but I'm not sure how vB handles styles so that might not be enough.

I'm already doing it, but thanks.

Bright is the new dark! Just look at Portal!
Shit what am I saying here? I like dark sites! Anyway, I'll get my dark TTLG, so I'm not complaining.
