The problem is that there's no actual content. Years-old news postings. And links to other sites that have their own designs. Most people come to ttlg.com itself for the forum. Why not make the forums the front page or at least the focus? And have links to the subsidiary sites from there?
All I'm saying is (and I'm no designer) I'd find it hard to get inspired to make a design where there is no really cool purpose to the thing being designed. It's basically just a fancy sign outside a shop.

I kind of agree. Short of a drastic change, the forums are now the main site of TTLG as far as I know... It would make sense to have them prominently on the homepage.

The Hub will be rebuilt, and be used to attract new visitors, so there will be change.
Let's keep this thread on the design of a new hub, rather than what you think about the hub's current state.

Sure thing.
I'll try to think of something. Will make good training as I plan a few redesigns on my own :)

Please have the design layout to scale to your desktop's resolution. It's no longer 2000, it's not necessary to lock a layout to 640x480 or 800x600.

As stated, the designs should be for a liquid layout, or be fixed to 990/995 pixels wide.

My point was not that the current hub sucks, rather that it's hard to come up with inspiration for how the hub should look before one knows what it's actually going to be used for.
What might be cool is if there would be a way that TTLG members can flag news stories from the subsites or threads from the forums (like Digg) as cool, and given enough TTLG-Diggs, these could be bounced as news events to the front page (with moderator veto, perhaps)? Kinda like "what's going on across TTLG RIGHT NOW"
Then passing people could happen upon the hub and think "hay, these guys know a thing or two about shit".
I realise I'm not helping as to what it should actually look like, but surely you gotta know what's going in before you can give it a layout?
Anyway, just brainstormin'

I quite like that, but not so much the light blue backing of the central area. Bit too light?

Thanks, as one always says in such a case, it's work in progress! Although the progress has somewhat stopped now, for reasons outlined above.
As long as I have no idea with what awesomeness the hub will be filled I'm basically of the same opinion as many others here, that the hub should be (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums). Or maybe a glorified version of it.
