Four concepts that GBM did back in 2007, just to... well because I have them
They do not necessarily follow any of the guidelines listed above.
I like #1, but I think the content area is too narrow, and it is quite blocky. But I do like the "paint splat" and header, and the grey is a nice change, even if it's not necessarily the 'in' thing at the moment.
Wasn't too keen on #2. Too dull for my tastes, but I do like the use of the LGS logo as a watermark.
#3 was pretty good. It could do with some brightening up with some more imagery, but not too much. Also the lead article font doesn't work for me, and I'm not too keen on the logo area.
I like the gears for #4, along with the site thumbnails. The bottom area was only a placeholder, so ignore that. It also doesn't use the signature colours, which is a 'must'.
Plus the LGS logo is missing, but that could be in as a watermark.

I'd been thinking about the LGS logo as a watermark for the background, otherwise some watermark collage of the various games' iconography, or clickable icons for the various boards. Eh.:)
I'm still curious about how to make the hub as meaningful to newcomers as veteran members. Just thinking aloud: If the main sections of the forum index were given their own pages, and the current version of the index was eliminated, so the hub's expanded list of links replaced the full index page, and the links went to a main section where all the sub-forums for it were listed, it would eliminate much of the hub's redundancy that many learn to bypass. Not perfect, but I'm trying to legitimize the need for the hub for the majority. Buttons with icons and labeling, that when rolled over, gave a description after the style of what is found on the current index page for each of the sub-forums. The main sections and sub-forums would have to be reorganized for it to work, though. Oof!

Um, that sounds like you want to force people to use the new hub by taking away the main forum index - replacing an efficient and easy-to-use system with a more complex one that will probably be harder to use... for no reason?
