Congratulations on your work so far, and for the playtest.
I haven't tried the previous beta, so this is a collection of first impressions.
Great music, pretty cool textures. Impressed with the map poster. Surprised by massive wooden crates on a spaceship. Marines models definitely don't look very space-y - maybe a reskinning would do the trick?
Heh, I guess I should replace the wooden crate texture with something that looks more plastic like. I agree the marines don't look very space like - basically because I took the SWAT model from a pack of 3D models and made some tiny adjustments. What do you suggest to make them look more space like?

Here's a bug.
Several times I have experienced the active marine "black screening" - not reacting to input. Pressing the spacebar switches normally to the next marine. But now the previous, blacked-out fellow is missing from the level. The icon displays normally.
Apart from a memory access violation, that's the only technical issue I've encountered so far.
I'll check out those bugs, thanks.

Kudos for the backstory in the manual, too. What I'd like to know is what star system contains Mendel and Goran. Since you've put Justice at Wolf 359 and Atlas at ε Eridani, I mean.
I never really gave much thought to the actual locations in the storyline, I basically chose star systems arbitrarily based on their proximity to earth and never thought of where Mendel and Goran might be. I'll tentatively put them around Tau Ceti for now.

Good and forgiving game (I made a lot of n00bie mistakes).
I wonder how is going to be the final version.
Thanks. I tried to make the game fairly easy to get into.

this is looking really good man. I enjoyed your previous release, this is cool.
Kind of reminds me of marathon, its got that feeling to it .
I keep getting random crashes though. I dont know if its an issue with my hardware or what, i'll get more details and let you know.
theres also a typo in the opening marquee. I dont remember what it was but i'll post that too next time I fire it up.
Thanks for the feedback, i'll keep investigating those bugs. Let me know if you can remember what the spelling mistake was.

Wasn't "Derelict" the name given to the, uh, derelict spaceship in Alien also?

No, it was just 'the derelict'. I mean, that's like naming your flagship Flagship.

Or like naming an alien 'The Alien'.

In Aliens Ripley described the ship as being Derelict but I can't recall it being named as such. In any case I admit it was the inspiration for the title of the game.

Hold the phone. Why haven't I noticed this before? I'm a big Space Hulk fan! :)
earok, excellent job! Derelict looks like a game of promise. Have you written the engine yourself? How did you design the scene-graph (been trying to design a good one myself for some time now)? Have you implemented a scripting system? What kind?
Sorry about all the questions, it's just that I'm so excited to see a fellow game programmer! :)
At some point, if you need, I could offer some assistance. I really think this is going to become something big at some point, in some form.

IIRC, Ripley mentions 'the derelict' or 'a derelict', but not specifically as the name of said derelict.

Thanks man. I did write the engine myself, but it wasn't a massive undertaking since it is programmed in Blitz Basic 3D (which has Direct X commands built into it).
Not 100% sure what you mean by scene graph, do you mean the map/radar in the corner or the blueprints on the walls, or something else entirely?
No scripting system. Too much hassle and I'd rather avoid scripted events if possible.

No problem at all. I love your enthusiasm.

I can always use new maps, textures, playtesting/bug hunting, design suggestions, voice acting eventually (!). If you send me an email (earok3d at gmail) I could send you a copy of the level editor with an explanation of how it all works.

(I'd be up for voice acting eventually, by the way.)
Kolya on 1/4/2008 at 12:41
I'd be up for lending my impression to a space marine!
Matthew can be the monsters.
