I'm using a Dell Ultrasharp U2211H 21.5" that I picked up for $250 off Amazon and I'm pretty happy with it, and I say this as someone who's stubbornly stuck with a CRT for years.

Thanks for the advice, dethy & Matthew. I know that my CRT isn't going to last forever (it's about 9 yrs. old already) and eventually I'll have to bite the bullet and get a flatscreen. You better believe that when that day comes, I'll be perusing this forum looking for advice on the latest monitor models. ;)

I am now officially in Seventh Heaven. If my smile gets any bigger, it's gonna meet round the back and the top of my head's gonna pop off! :cheeky:

I know my old CRT won't last forever but afaic the CRT gives better graphics and enables more intense immersion than the flatscreen I had (plus it provides a warm perch for my little airhead-kitty, Bella Mia, whose furry butt is visible ontop my monitor in the pic). Maybe it was just the flatscreen brand that sucked in the first place, I don't know.
CRT will always give better blacks, yes, seeing as any form of backlight LCD can't render actual "black" due to design characteristics. That said, I've got the precursor to dethtoll's screen, the Dell 2209WA, and I can totally recommend e-IPS panels. Good colour reproduction, good blacks and viewing angles, and all that while maintaining a reasonably low response time and an acceptable pricetag, unlike high end S-IPS panels and all that.
Not saying rush out and get one now, but when you decide to change your monitor keep e-IPS in mind. Dell and Samsung are the main ones providing this sort of units, I think the panels for both are made by the latter.

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 620 and have loved it. It is stable, works quickly, and keeps up with the games I play. I do recommend upgrading the RAM and video card from the standard which is what I did.
