Playing games at 1920x1080 resolution with decent framerate (even old ones in 3D) require a better graphics card, methinks.

Ok, several issue'd jump out straight away -
* This laptop is now (
http://www.retrevo.com/s/Asus-N55SL-DS71-Laptops-review-manual/id/24084dj496/t/1-2/) over 2 years old, so IMHO not worth it nor the $700 they are asking.
* The screen is glossy, so it will show any and all reflections which is a complete joke on a mobile device.
* 15" screen is a tad too small for a 1980*1080 resolution, everything will be tiny and possibly cause headaches to the eye strain.
* As basso has commented, the GT635 isnt a great GPU, its only has 144 cores. T1/2/3 will play fine at the native resolution of the screen, but other games will have to be played at a lower res. And bear in mind if the screen's inbuilt scalling isnt good the game will look even worse.
* your model has a slow 5400 rpm hard drive, (the worst type, but a lot of laptops come with em)
Can you only buy from Amazon, due to points you want to spend..? Otherwise is there a place over there like (
http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptops/) PcSpecialist that can do custom latops..?
If you cant ONLY buy from Amazon, and after a quick search found this as one of many options -

Well one last thing I can think to do with my laptop is a repair install. I've read it doesn't but just to be certain, that doesn't format the hard drive correct?

You mean re-installing windows and all your applications & games, this is easy and should take only take a 1-2hrs for someone who knows what they are doing.

The idea of the Repair-mode on the Windows-Install CD is to attempt fixing an existing Windows installation.
It will certainly not format your disk.
But to be be honest: I am not sure I would try that even in case I was desperate, since one can not promise your laptop will work as good as it did before.
The 'repair' - I imagine - may even produce some irky other issues. Although this is my personal gut feeling only.
EDIT: forgot to mention the following: I don't see how 'repairing' the Windows install could possibly have an effect on the problems you mention.
That repair method fixes some pretty much basic Windows internal stuff. For sure it won't care about any issues you are having with 3rd party software, such as games or drivers.
It is providing some 'First Aid' in case something is terribly wrong and the doctor will fix it with a hammer and an amputation saw, in order to make sure the 'patient' does not die and you can at least log on and then see yourself how to get along.
But what you need is some sort of 'cosmetic surgery'.
Maybe uninstall everything on your system that is related to audio/video drivers, fancy audio/video decoders you might have installed.
Adbode Flash, Adobe Shockwave, .... whatever
Well, basicly uninstall everything that your life does not depend on.
Especially and software that you installed recently.
Reboot the system and install the latest version of what you really need.
