A few people have mentioned that it is possible to delete a thread if you're the starter and if no one else has posted. I can't seem to do that. Was that option removed when I had that fight with SE about me editing an earlier post? Or is it because I can't do it at all?

Only moderators and administrators can delete threads outright. It used to be that the topic starter could delete the first post (and thereby the entire thread), but that is no longer possible.

Does any outright thread deletion take place? I thought the offensive ones were banished to the land of wind and ghosts.

Generally useless threads (ie duplicates etc) get deleted, most stuff would just get locked, unless it was deemed too Not-Cool, in which case it would get spirited away to lands unknown.
