Well, I actually would vote against it. Though it has certain advantages. Edit is one thing, deleting is quite different. You can ruin order of a thread by doing so...

When I've seen it happen in the past, the replyer usually gets away with throwing in an edit "the original poster deleted a post generally saying X" ... and I think people are unsympathetic enough to this not to blame the replyer for looking stupid.

Deleting posts through embarassment show lack of intergrity, whereas a better plan is to realise you've made a mistake and leave it as a reminder that you've learned from it.
