and you're complaining because? I'm sure you'd rather see "make dood blow up 20 feet in air" or my favorite "coool headshot!!1!!!11!!"
You missed the whole discussion we had about how HR funnels players into a certain playstyle. Begone.

In general, it's only logical to have achievements ranging from very easy to very hard or outlandish, as they are stepping stones and a way of marking a player's progress.
No, it's incredibly stupid to have easy/mandatory Achievements, because the player hasn't meaningfully "achieved"
anything.
Console 'tards just need their steady stream of pretty gold stars is why the Achievement system has devolved to its current state.

Yeah, I'm going to have to go with ZB's conclusion. Achievements these days work as a psychological buttress for players with frail egos, with the game going, 'oh you so cool' at regular points just because they walked through a goddamn doorway that connected to the next level. 50 kills with weapon X/Y/Z? Reaching the end of a chapter? There's nothing special about those.

Fixed.

Well, achievements can also be used to track someone through the game. I made a thread in GenGaming once about how you could check how many people actually finish videogames they buy on steam just by looking at "reached level 2" achievements. I would assume devs do that kind of thing too.

I've heard the same thing, and it's certainly an interesting way of looking at stats. But two questions: first, why is it necessary to use Achievements to capture those sorts of metrics? Second, doesn't the presence of progress achievements skew players into playing more of the game to get those achievements? Assuming players go out of their way to get achievements. And assuming developers care whether they made a good game without achievements in the first place :p.

Do you honestly think that any video game 'achievements' are
meaningful, whether we're talking about finishing the first story mission or ghosting "Life of the Party"? Achievements can make a game more fun, they can add longevity, they can serve as an incentive to gamers. (They can also lead players to meta-game and they can drag you out of the game world.) I don't understand why they should be geared exclusively towards hardcore gamers. If a game caters exclusively to complete newbs, that's silly, but so is the opposite. And frankly, so many of the complaints here sound a lot like that old joke about how the food is so bad, and there's so little of it!
