Okay, while Gattaca is one of my favourite films
ever (period) and is so jammed full of cinematic goodness that I can't even begin to compliment it enough... I never ever got the impression that
Ethan wasn't returning. I understand you've repeated a very poignant quote that perhaps demonstrates this point, but I've never looked at it that way... I guess I never contemplated that part.
I'm quite sure that he's coming back. It's the same as the swimming, he just focused on the succeeding part, leave the rest of it to later, doesn't mean there is no rest of it. I figure he's made it out there, the mission will happen, he'll eventually come home, life will go on, triumph in the wake. Maybe he'll head up the government change to stop the injustice of the DNA testing stuff.

The most awesome group death scene I remember seeing as a kid has to be the end of
Raiders of the Lost Ark:
The death angels, the trenchcoat Nazi when his face literally melts off his, um ... face. And then Belloq exploding in the end!! I was blown away by that whole scene and remember my reaction to this day! :D
Oh man, how could I have forgotten that! Agreed, that was an awesome scene! It actually scared me and creeped me out when I first saw it, but the following times (I was much older) it was awesome!
And let's not forget
Donnovan's death in
The Last Crusade! Awesome stuff! That one
still creeps me out!

I've lost track. Are we listing truly memorable death scenes, or just every fucking death scene we've ever watched?
My contribution:
the gook sniper at the end of Full Metal Jacket. Hardcore, man. 8-Ball and Doc J were pretty harsh too. It all dovetailed rather nicely.
The one that shot the nigger and the kyke? Or was it a honky? I forget. Whatever happened that sambo sure screamed like he was missing his watermelon. I didn't know crackers could make that much noise either. Unless they're sleeping with their sisters.

I fainted in Black Hawk Down when the soldier bled to death from the leg wound. They were holding his artery shut as he died. That was a true story, which made it all the worse. The "I want to go home!" scene in Saving Private Ryan was pretty bad, too, but I stayed conscious. I did get pretty dizzy, though.
