I bought a XFX 9800GT 512MB as an interim replacement GPU until something better is within my price range (200 series for under $400 NZD - I wouldn't touch an ATI card until they've fixed compatibility issues with older DX games; ie DX6 classics like Thief 1/2, System Shock 2, Shogo and AvP all run like arse). When under load the stock cooler is really frigging loud, drowning out every other fan in my case including the Zalman CPU cooler. At least it ain't as loud as my Xbox 360 whilst accessing discs.
What's more during an intense Left 4 Dead session the GPU was setting off smoke alarms in the house. I wanted to keep the stock cooler to preserve the warranty, but stuff it, I'll be attaching my Zalman VF1000.

LOL! (not funny, but LOL! anyway!)
I'd say your card may be DOA... look to refund / replace.

hi Evaunit
I assume the smoke comment was in jest..?
With regard to replacing the stock cooler, swapping ti with a 3rd party cooler dosent invalidate your warranty, just keep the OEM cooler for when you sell it or have to send it back for repair etc.

Why would I joke about that? Although it may've been a freak coincidence that the smoke alarms in the house went off whilst the GPU's cooler was buzzing like mad.

I think it must have been coincidence, because if the gfx card was producing enough smoke to set of a fire alarm, the card would been completely dead by now.

Not all graphics card producers (not GPU producers) are the same. I've read several reviews about the 9800 GTs and some are, in general, quieter than others. (Then there is the issue of heat, which is related.)
I bought one that is rather quiet, EVGA, but I heard some had issues.
Yeah, heat is a huge problem though. "Single slots," especially. Since they tend to take up two slots anyways (at least on my mobo), I just go with the dual slot version with extra ventilation.
For your card, I've read that some idle at around 70 C, which is a lot.

I know. Eg XFX only use 100% reference design for their GPUs (board layouts, cooler, etc.).
In retrospect I shouldn't have been impatient, it was a Friday afternoon and I wanted a new card immediately. If I had waited until Monday I could've purchased bought an Asus or Gigabyte 9800GT that used a better and quieter non-reference cooler, from a different shop.
BTW I'm still running the same card and have yet to change the cooler. It's so loud that the noise penetrates my headphones in more relaxed games.

This is actually good to know, I was thinking about getting that card recently since it was reasonably priced.
I don't recall anything as bad as what you're describing in the few reviews that I read, though; so it may or may not be some sort of defect.

You can buy quieter after market coolers for your type card quite easily btw.
