Just now got around to playing Dear Esther (I know, I know, what the fuck took me so long, etc.)
I wish modders would fucking learn to use the subtitles system included with Source games. Not all gamers have perfect hearing.
Not-always-clear British accent fighting for volume supremacy with the otherwise beautiful music, no subtitles... that's a fail. And considering listening to the VO is basically the entire point of this mod, I'm not impressed.
Does Korsakovia have subtitles? Failing that, are the VOs actually audible? If not then that's a skip.

I actually had the same problem as you in dear esther, so I never played it for more than 5 minutes (that and it was butt ugly). But apparently someone is (
http://www.littlelostpoly.co.uk/devblog/) remaking the mod with better graphics and subtitles.
The voice over in korsakovia is much easier to understand though as there is rarely any music on at the same time, and there is no accent or anything. I personally had no problem understanding most of it, and the mod is pretty good you should give it a try. It's still ugly as fuck with barely any gameplay but the atmosphere is really creepy, and it can be quite scary. I haven't finished it yet cause I'm stuck on the second level though.

Well, I might give it a look later. My October gaming schedule is dedicated to horror and Fallout 2 so Korsakovia might fit nicely into that. But not using the subtitles system, considering how easy it is to use, not using it is just lazy.

Awesome! That 'someone' happens to be the guy responsible for some of the most impressive-looking Mirror's Edge levels (like the final one, pictured above the blog title). He knows a thing or two about aesthetic design, so it'll definitely look pretty damn good when he's done with it. Plus, he's locked it down to refining Dear Esther's visual template more or less faithfully, which is an added layer of awesomeness to the project.

Awesome for the remake.
Sucks that Korsakova comes out right after I leave for college and have on gaming PC. Sigh. Summer, then!

Looks like I have to skip on Korsakovia for now :erg:. Doesn't seem to work properly with my pirated Orange Box, and I'm not going to buy the original. I've had enough problems with my original HL2.

I don't normally pirate games. But with Steam it's personal. It's given me nothing but problems with all 3 games own for it. HL2? two weeks just getting it to run, then constant Steam-related crashes, and I never managed to get multiplayer working (that was on my previous, fast internet connection). SH:Homecoming? 14 hours of "preparing to launch game" until I managed to fix it (and not thanks to Steam support). FEAR2? Couldn't download the patch for some 5 days, couldn't run the game without it.

Wow, what the fuck? That's pretty extreme. What's your PC like? And, for that matter, your internet connection?
(still doesn't warrant complaining that a mod won't work with your pirated game)

The whole HL2 debacle was on a previous system, can't remember the specs, anyway it was enough to run the game. Part of the problem with HL2 was a misprinted serial, but: after a week of struggling with the original, I downloaded Steam-less version and played it pretty much without problems until I managed to sort things out with the original. When that finally ran, lo and behold: it was nigh unplayable and crashed every 20 minutes or so.
Current PC is just ok, Core 2 Duo 2.20, 2 gigs of DDR2, 9600 GT, running on a well-kept XP SP2. What's is admittedly keeping me back is the connection, which is super-crappy wi-fi, which is however the only option in this neck of the woods. I wouldn't even dream of multiplayer with this. 2 second lags. However: it's enough for product activation. But noooo, Steam won't let me run a game without first updating to the current version.
