That's kind of a dick move. I was planning to get the remake just to support them but no free original version available means no sell from me.

Good for them.

Bad for everyone else.

Interesting how perspectives change, eh Digi?
Edit: also, you can still get the free mod from other sites, just not the moddb.

It'll be back on moddb soon. They're just rejiggering something and it has nothing to do with the thing going commercial.

Unless this is priced in the 99-cent range, I don't see it selling a lot.

I don't think anyone is expecting it to sell like hotcakes, but
A. He was making in anyway, and some money is more money than no money, and
B. It gets a lot more attention as a commercial release. The mainstream gaming press (and game players) largely ignore mods; the fact is that Dear Esther is being covered for the first time by places like Joystiq simply because of the commercial release (and, reading the comments, the vast majority of people had never heard of it).
It is a little obnoxious that they deleted the old version, though understandable from a commercial standpoint. I won't be surprised if they re-post it later; I think they don't want impatient folks to rush to that instead of playing the Special Edition.
Incidentally, I could work in the definitional arguments during the rough draft of the Dear Esther chapter, but I might give it a shot during the revision process.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did a "pay what you want" model. I've been keeping an eye on Briscoe's devblog, and Dear Esther going retail is a very popular idea among his commenters there. They've been pushing for it ever since he brought it up as possible a few updates back.

I asked on RPS why should I pay for the game when I hated the original mod (and listed what I didn't like about it) and what the commercial remake brings to the table that makes it worth my scant resources of money, and got a very snotty answer by Briscoe. I don't think I'll be buying this.

I hated the original. What, pray tell, makes this worth the money for someone who thought the original was ugly, couldn’t fathom the plot because it had no subtitles and therefore was forced to try to listen to a barely comprehensible Brit accent that was losing a war for volume supremacy with LOUD THOUGHTFUL MUSIC?

Luckily you’ll be pleased to know that I have applied copious lens flares and DOF as well as a teal and orange tint to everything in the remake to make the graphics more appealing, and have made the volume levels much more random and incoherent as to enhance the experience. We also asked the voice actor to re-record his lines in a strong scottish accent for authenticity. The Soundtrack has been replaced with thrash metal and we now can provide subtitles in both latin and klingon. So hopefully you’ll have a much more pleasent experience this time around! :P
Nice. :)
